Middleweight Austin “Ammo” Williams (18-1, 12 KOs) scored a tough but unanimous decision over Patrice Volny (19-2, 13 KOs) on Saturday night in Orlando, FL, live on DAZN.
It wasn’t a pretty win, but Williams did enough to outpoint Volny who was a very game fighter. All three judges saw this one 118-110, 116-112, 115-113 for Williams, who earned his 18th victory. This was a hard boxing lesson for Williams, who continues to climb the rankings in hopes of a big fight down the road for a world title.
In the opening round, Williams was the busier fighter, shooting his right jab and changing the levels of his straight left hand. Volny, who had the high guard up most of the round, was taking punches but not throwing too many back at Williams. Volny had a much better second round as he opened up a bit more after seeing what Williams had to offer in the opening round. Volny scored with strong straight right hands, but Williams would land the more accurate shots.

Williams dictated the pace throughout the third round, but in the last 30 seconds, Volny came back strong with four punch combinations. The late-round surge caught Williams off guard, but he was able to avoid getting hurt by anything big. There was good back-and-forth action between the two fighters in the fourth round as Williams and Volny each had their moments. It was hard to see which fighter was getting the better of the other at this point of the fight.
Williams continued his body attack in the fifth round to get around Volny’s high guard defense. During the moments when Williams stepped back to take a breather, Volny would seize the moment and get his combinations off to Williams’s head and body. Volny had a good first half of the sixth round as the left hook found a home on Williams’ chin. Towards the end of the round, Williams landed a hard left hook that rocked Volny, and although Williams thought he had him hurt, he could not capitalize enough on the moment before the sound of the bell.
The second half of the fight was close as Williams would control the action and then Volny would come back and dictate the pace in the next. They finished the fight in that manner, and although the judges had it wide, the fight was much closer than the scores read at the end.
Edgar Berlanga Scores 1st Round Knockout
Super middleweight Edgar Berlanga (23-1, 18 KOs) wasted no time and knocked down Jonathan Gonzalez-Ortiz (20-1-1, 16 KOs) three times en route to a first-round knockout. It was competitive for about 30 seconds, but after that, Berlanga did what he was supposed to do and quickly got Gonzalez-Ortiz out of there. Berlanga is now a promotional free agent, so it’ll be interesting to see what happens later this year for Berlanga.
Undercard Results
Olympic Bronze Medalist Omari Jones (1-0, 1 KO) scored a quick second-round TKO over Alessio Mastronunzio (14-6, 4 KOs) as the Orlando native scored his first pro win in front of friends and family. Jones looked comfortable and strong as he heads to what appears to be a bright future.
Although it took Jamaine Ortiz (19-2-1, 9 KOs) a few rounds to find his rhythm, when he did find it, Ortiz showed off his championship experience on his way to a unanimous decision victory over Yomar Alamo (22-4-1, 13 KOs) to kick off the DAZN card from Orlando, FL. All three judges scored it (99-91 x 2 & 98-92) for Ortiz, who is now set up for a bigger fight in the future against some of Matchroom’s top talent at 140.
