Bohachuk vs Ortiz Jr. Fight Results: Ortiz Squeezes Out A Majority Decision

All week, it was billed as a main event that would produce a war, and it did precisely that. Vergil Ortiz Jr. (22-0, 21 KOs) becomes the interim WBC junior middleweight champion, scoring a narrow majority decision over Serhii Bohachuk (24-2, 23 KOs). The judges saw this one 113-113, 114-112, and 114-112 for Ortiz, who now has his sights set on WBA junior middleweight champion Terence Crawford. Before the fight, Turki Alalshikh said that’s the fight he wants to make pending the outcome of the main event, so now that it is official, time will tell if we get that fight in the near future.

These two men wasted no time, and once the fight began, they both threw heavy bombs. Bohachuk used good movement, a stiff jab, and a straight right hand to keep Ortiz at bay. Ortiz was landing some vicious overhand rights and left hooks to the body, which hurt Bohachuk. There was a moment where a punch sequence saw Ortiz hit the canvas, and it was ruled a slip. The replay looked as though it should have been ruled a knockdown. The referee asked the commission if they wanted to review it, and they declined.

Bohachuk had a good second round and created a small cut on the bridge of Ortiz’s nose. He kept the fight at mid-range, and things were working for him, but towards the end of the round, Ortiz began to load up and throw a double left hook to the body, which got Bohachuk’s attention. The third round was fought in a phone booth as Ortiz was up close landing right uppercuts and left hooks to the body while Bohachuk threw his own right uppercut and right hook.

Bohachuk had a good fourth round as Ortiz appeared to need a breather after three rounds of non-stop action. Bohachuk scored well with the right uppercut on the inside and a left jab. After it was ignored, the commission called the first round slip a knockdown, so the first round was scored 10-8 for Bohachuk. The sense of urgency was felt as Ortiz threw more punches in the fifth round, but Bohachuk stayed composed and countered well. Ortiz would finish the round strongly with the overhand right and left hook to the body.

Ortiz kept the pressure on Bohachuk in the sixth round, but it just didn’t seem like he was fazed by it. Bohachuk landed some big right uppercuts while Ortiz landed his own hard overhand rights. Back and forth they went until the end of the round. Bohachuk began to take over the fight in the seventh round as Ortiz appeared to be fatiguing. Although Ortiz tried to rally late, Bohachuk had complete control of the round with his uppercuts and left jab. After Ortiz looked uninspired, Bohachuk landed a left hook that knocked down Ortiz for the second knockdown of the fight. That woke Ortiz, who came roaring back and, after an offensive onslaught, hurt Bohachuk toward the end of the round.

War broke out in round nine as both men went blow for blow. Ortiz seemed desperate as he felt down on the scorecards while Bohachuk landed a straight right hand that was hurting Ortiz. He came back in the tenth round with a solid left jab, and it hypnotized Bohachuk and made way for the overhand right. Bohachuk wasn’t as active, although he did land some hard uppercuts here and there. Ortiz needed a big 11th round, so he landed a huge left hook that rocked Bohachuk and put him on shaky legs. Ortiz tried his best to get the knockdown, but Bohachuk just didn’t want to give in.

The last round was everything that was expected from these two warriors: a blow-for-blow round with both men throwing and landing their hardest shots. There was no knockdown in the last round, but the action resulted in the crowd going wild as the fight concluded.

Charles Conwell Scores One-Punch Knockout

Charles Conwell (20-0, 15 KOs) lived up to his moniker of “Bad News” as he scored a one-punch, second-round knockout over Khiary Gray (18-7, 13 KOs). Conwell now looks to potentially face the winner of the main event.

Gray began the fight actively with a stabbing left jab, but when it landed to the body of Conwell, he just smiled. Conwell would then throw some hard, chopping right hands to the body of Gray, which set up the two punch combination to the head. In the second round, Conwell would throw decoy light punches to the head of Gray but would then rip to the body with a left hook. That sequence would happen towards the middle of the round, but when the left hook to the body landed, Gray went down and would not get up. Conwell has been avoided for years, but now, with Golden Boy, it appears he can’t be avoided any longer.

Kenneth Sims Jr. (21-2-1, 8 KOs) scored a fifth-round TKO victory over Jonathan Romero (35-5, 19 KOs) in what was a weird fight. The first round was all Sims as he was landing some huge left hooks to the body of Romero, who usually fights at super bantamweight but took the fight on 24 hours’ notice. The rest of the fight showed Sims teeing off, but Romero was too brave for his own good. Romero took everything Sims had to offer, but as the rounds piled on, Romero couldn’t take the punishment. Once the end of the fifth round came, Romero was ready to put a halt to the action.

Gabriela Fundora Scores One-Way Unanimous Decision

Gabriela Fundora (14-0, 6 KOs) continued her winning ways as she scored a dominant ten-round unanimous decision to retain her IBF flyweight title against Daniela Asenjo (16-4-3, 2 KOs). Fundora continues to improve her footwork and punch selection, making her a scary fighter for the future of women’s boxing. Fundora’s check right hook and straight left hand did not miss throughout the whole fight. There were moments when the fight could have been stopped, but Fundora just kept the pressure and overwhelming offense going all the way to a decision victory.

“Undisputed is next for me,” said Gabriela Fundora. “I want to break the record for the youngest undisputed champion. I feel like a fight against Gabriela Alaniz would be such an action-packed fight, and good for me as well as good for Golden Boy. Asenjo was a good fighter, I got her with some hard shots, and she was able to last the 10-rounds with me.”

This fight didn’t take long as Joel Iriarte (4-0, 4 KOs) landed an early right hook to the body that instantly hurt Miguel Ortiz (3-2, 1 KO). Iriarte kept his composure and didn’t jump on Ortiz, but when he landed a huge left hook to the head of Ortiz, which hurt him badly, Iriarte jumped on him, forcing the referee to stop the fight. Iriarte scores another impressive win as he quickly becomes the prospect to keep an eye on.
