Callum Simpson vs Steed Woodall Fight Results: Simpson Scores 2nd RD TKO

Callum Simpson (16-0, 11 KOs) wanted to give Steed Woodall a thrashing and his rooters their pound of flesh on Saturday, January 11th, at the Canon Medical Arena in Sheffield, England. Simpson retained his British and Commonwealth super-middleweight crowns, but referee Mark Bates prevented a definitive ending when he halted the meeting at 1:56 of round two via TKO.

It could have been splashier, yes, but Simpson still adds a decent name to his resume. The winner post-fight said it felt “bittersweet,” referencing his late sister (see below). Of the stoppage, the victor said the ref did the right thing. “He would have gone down again, but the ref did his job keeping him safe,” Callum Simpson said. The BOXXER promotion ran on Peacock in the US.

Simpson, age 28, is hoping to emerge from the South Yorkshire region after seeing Naseem Hamed, Kell Brook, and other luminaries excel. The Barnsley boxer captured the British and Commonwealth Titles in August, beating champion Zak Chelli via a unanimous points decision.

Both Men Come In Off Wins

The Birmingham man Woodall entered at 19-2-1, 12 KOs. The 30-year-snagged a career-best win over the previously unbeaten Lerrone Richards in June.

In round one, the lanky Callum kept the jab moving. Steed looked a full head shorter. Would he be able to get inside on Simpson? In the last minute, Callum moved more. He was looking to get into a comfy rhythm. Body work from Callum stood out in the frame, and Steed ate some sharp ones to the head as well. In the second, Steed sought to land a right counter against the taller foe. Simpson, too strong and busy, sent Woodall to the mat at 1:33. He rose and fought on. Steed ate launches but was surely defending himself. The ref, though, hopped in, early it looked to many.

A left hook/right uppercut started the ending. Steed was on one knee. Upon restart, there was more smashing from Simpson. Woodall’s eyes looked ok, though, and he argued the call from Bates.

Note: Callum Simpson has had to contend with the death of his sister Lily, age 19. Last September, she went on holiday and perished from injuries sustained in a four-wheeler crash. Fans on site and watching off stream saw an homage to Simpson, “LRS” for Lily-Rae on his robes and trunk before the main event kicked off.

Co-Feature Pits Caroline Dubois vs. Jessica Camara In WBC Lightweight Title Fight

“Sweet” Caroline Dubois(10-0-1, 5 KOs), fighting out of London, came in the favorite versus Jessica Camara. She knocked down Camara in the first, and the fight got stopped after two rounds, a technical draw.

The younger sister of heavyweight titlist Daniel Dubois—she turned 24 Saturday, he is 27—was 10-0, 5 KOs. She took the WBC interim lightweight title in August, her last outing. The “real” WBC lightweight strap was up for grabs, ten two minute rounds. The former super lightweight world title challenger “Cobra” Camara, entering at 14-4, 3 KOs, came from Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

In the first round, the lefty stance Dubois looked light on her feet and started strong. She got in Camara’s face and sent her to the mat at 1:15. A one-two did the damage. Camara, age 36, got her legs and finished the round, with Dubois ripping nastily to the body to end the first.

In round two, Dubois again started fast. A cut from a head clash formed on the left eye of Camara, who offered some counters but more so concentrated on staying on her feet. The round ended, and the ref told the ringside doctor to assess Camara. The plug was pulled as her right eye swelled. She didn’t seem to protest; it seemed clear that Dubois fights on another level.

Dubois said after that it felt great to glove up on her birthday. “She did not want it,” pointing out that it was a matter of time before her power caused Camara to fully capitulate. And what’s next? “I want Terri Harper,” Dubois stated. Harper has the WBO lightweight title currently. Dubois may well be the best lady campaigning, pound for pound, so I’d see Harper was the underdog if/when it gets made.
