Canelo Alvarez ‘Never Say No To Anything’ Regarding A David Benavidez Fight

‘Once In A Lifetime’, that is what is said about the upcoming Canelo Alvarez (63–2–2, 39 KO) vs. Terence Crawford (41–0, 31 KO) showdown. However, WBC light heavyweight champion David Benavidez, who has been calling out Alvarez for the longest time, believes that their potential fight has the opportunity to be a lot bigger. With the voices from Benavidez’s corner growing louder, Canelo revealed that he had never said no to fighting Benavidez.

Talking at the Grand Arrivals, he stated that he was a lot more focused on the Crawford fight.

“Look, I never say no to anything,” Canelo said while talking about Benavidez’s callout. “We’ll see later. But I’m focused a hundred percent on this fight.”

While those were Canelo’s words, Benavidez has been calling out the Guadalajaran for a considerable amount of time. The announcement of Canelo’s four-fight deal with Riyadh Season was received with criticism from Benavidez, who saw little to no chance of his fight reaching fruition.

Benavidez stated that he was not trying to fight Canelo for the money. But it was what the sport needed at the moment, and as fighters, they owed it to their fans. Labelling it the “best Mexican shootout in boxing history,” he believed that the superfight would undoubtedly be a crowd puller, drawing in throngs of boxing aficionados.

While Benavidez has previously fought in the light heavyweight division, Benavidez does not see him coming back to the super middleweight division anytime soon.

If I never get that fight, I’ll be fine with it. I’m fine with it. Cuz I’m staying in my lane. I’m trying to fight, trying to beat the other best in the world. But if that fight does happen, you know, Imma be ready for it. And it’s looking like it could happen,” Benavidez said while talking to the Ring Magazine. “I have the belt at 175. Canelo says he only fights for greatness, for titles, that’s what excites him. So, now I got a title. You know what I mean? Imma just keep winning these fights, and I’m not thinking about Canelo. But if it does happen, we’re gonna be ready.”

Meanwhile, Canelo is more focused on maintaining his legacy by beating Crawford on Saturday night. Calling it one of the biggest fights of his career, he expressed his desire to find himself at the pedestals of boxing.

“This fight for me is big. It’s one of the biggest fights in my career,” he said. “For sure, it means a lot, this win is going to be in the very top.”

His opponent, Crawford, is also of the belief that the fight will be one of the biggest fights in the sport of boxing, “It ain’t going to do nothing but make the sport better, and the best is going to start fighting the best. Well, it’s going to be stamped in the history books, and the debate is going to be over.”
