Canelo Alvarez on A Terrence Crawford Rematch: ‘We Need To Run it Back’

Boxing superstar Saul “Canelo” Alvarez was the latest guest on the Mr. Vezace Podcast hosted by RING Magazine CEO Rick Reeno, where he discussed the Terence Crawford (42-0, 31 KOs) loss and why there should be a rematch.

In one of the clips from the episode, Canelo (63-3-2, 39 KOs) is asked about what happened on September 13, when he lost by unanimous decision (116-112, 115-113, and 115-113) to Crawford, which cost him the undisputed super middleweight title.

I try, but my body doesn’t respond,” Canelo told Reeno. “I have cramps in my legs, so it doesn’t respond the way I really want, but it is what it is. We learn from that and move forward. I know what mistakes I made in the fight and in the camp, too, but that is what boxing is about. I think a winner doesn’t mean you have to win every time. You need to learn from everything; from the losses, take the losses, learn from that, move forward, and still do the things you love.”

Canelo was then asked about a Crawford rematch, which he said, “I always give all his (Crawford) credit, but we need to run it back. After the fight, I say, ‘We need to run it back this fight’ because I don’t feel the way I really want, and I need to make this fight happen again. It’s going to be different. I think for him to deserve all the credit he needs to give me the rematch obviously. But oh well, he decide to retire and we need to accept that and move forward.”

Canelo’s appearance on the podcast comes shortly after Crawford wrapped up his retirement tour, which included a gathering with close family and friends a few weeks ago, and his most recent media tour, where he stated he isn’t coming out of retirement.

There could be pressure from the Saudis on Canelo to make the rematch, since they have two fights remaining with him. One of those fights will happen in September, with the last to take place sometime in 2027. No opponent has been announced for the September card yet, so this could be a way for the Saudis to determine if a Crawford rematch is even possible.

Regarding the appetite for a rematch, outside of Canelo fans, there doesn’t seem to be one. Contrary to the scorecards, Crawford dominated Canelo, and it wasn’t even close. It’s hard to see a rematch going any differently, but for now, it looks as though we will not find out unless things change with Crawford’s stance.
