Coach Kenny Ellis: ‘To Answer Your Question About ‘Tank,’ It’s All Cap’

Renowned trainers Kenny Ellis and Calvin Ford have weighed in on pay demands made by Devin Haney‘s team for a Gervonta Davis fight and David Benavidez‘s impressive showing against Demetrius Andrade.

Ellis and Ford certainly know a thing or two about the sweet science, and they have been blown away by how Benavidez has looked against stiff opposition. “El Monstruo” appeared to be getting muscled around against Andrade early in their fight to cap off Showtime’s final boxing pay-per-view, but Benavidez put his foot on the gas and pressured “Boo Boo.” He scored a fourth-round knockdown before sealing the deal once the sixth round concluded, as Andrade’s corner had seen enough.

During an interview with our own Abraham Gonzalez, Kenny Ellis heaped praise on the WBC interim super middleweight champion.

“Benavidez is a Mexican monster, man,” Ellis said. “I thought he was gonna start midway in the fight, but he started the first round. I thought it was gonna go to a 12-round decision, but the monster came out.”

Calvin Ford threw in his two cents, questioning whether or not the top-tier fighters at 168 pounds can handle Benavidez.

“The question is if the high-level guys are ready for him,” Ford said. “I was on another interview and the question is if I was Canelo [Alvarez], which one I would go at first [Jermall Charlo or Benavidez]?”

Ellis and Ford both play a vital part in the career of Gervonta “Tank” Davis. The trainers recently saw a quote from Devin Haney, who has vacated all of his lightweight titles in an effort to chase gold at 140 pounds. In the quote, Haney claimed that Davis’ team wants no part of a matchup against him. Ford slammed Haney for his high money demands.

“My opinion on it, I seen a quote that if he ain’t getting 30 [million], it ain’t enough,” Ford said. “I’m like, yo, you ain’t even putting them numbers in the seats or doing that. So, how can you ask for that? You offered Shakur [Stevenson] whatever you offered him, we gonna offer what we have for you.”

Ellis offered a blunt response to Haney’s claim.

“To answer your question about ‘Tank,’ it’s all cap,” Ellis chimed in.

As far as when fans can expect to see Davis return to action, Ford couldn’t give a date, but he assured the boxing world that an announcement is on the way.

“It’s coming, you know, we gotta make it right for the fans,” Ford said. “You support ‘Tank,’ he fights for you. So, it’s coming, it’s definitely coming. Right now, we’re just getting these young fighters out the way, we getting all these guys out the way so we can just focus on him because when we make that announcement, we gotta be all hands on deck.”
