Although there are reports circulating about what Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez is planning next, cruiserweight Robin Safar (19-0, 13 KOs) and his team tell FightsATW that they are still in negotiations for a fight with the unified champion.
On Friday, Dan Rafael tweeted, “Per source involved, unified cruiserweight titlist Zurdo Ramirez may not fight on the Jan. 16 card he was eyeing a tune-up on ahead of the Benavidez fight. If he does elect to fight he will not face Robin Safar, the Golden Boy fighter initially planned as the opponent.”
At the Badou Jack vs. Noel Mikaelian event in Los Angeles, CA, FightsATW spoke to Safar and his manager as they are “still negotiating” the fight and would like to aim for a February date and the undercard of the potential Ryan Garcia vs. Mario Barrios fight card.
“After my last fight, I came out with an injury on my knuckle in my right hand,” said Safar. “We’ve been talking about pushing the date to February on the undercard of the Ryan Garcia fight. It would be amazing if that can be. If I don’t get that fight, there are obviously a lot more opportunities that I could get. I want to fight for a title eliminator. I want to become a world champion. There are a lot of names out there that I want to fight so I’m taking it day by day.”
When asked if the Zurdo Ramirez fight doesn’t happen, who he would want to fight, Safar quickly mentioned a name familiar to fans. “I really want to fight Chris Billam Smith or get a title eliminator with any of the sanctioning bodies.”
Safar has strong momentum, which is why the Ramirez fight is even being considered. If that fight can’t happen soon, Safar’s team is confident that next year will be a big one for him. We’ll see how everything unfolds.
