David Benavidez Certain That The Canelo Alvarez Fight Is ‘More Alive Than Ever’

If there is one fight that ‘El Bandera Roja’ David Benavidez (30-0, 24 KOs) has long awaited, it is his all-Mexican showdown against Canelo Alvarez (63-3-2, 39 KOs). As he prepares to defend his world title against Anthony Yarde on November 22, he has a message for the doubters: he hasn’t forgotten his potential fight against Alvarez, a fight he believes is as alive as it can be.

In conversation with Salvador Rodriguez for ESPN Knockout, Benavidez was quick to remind fans that his fight against Alvarez will be much bigger than they anticipate, and he is hopeful it happens in 2026.

“Look, the fight with Canelo is more alive than ever. I think in 2026, it could be even bigger than anything we’ve seen, like bigger than Canelo vs. GGG. Fans have been waiting for this Mexican showdown. And with everything changing in boxing right now, it’s gonna happen,” he said.

Alvarez’s last few tangos inside the ring were anything but interesting, and that is putting it lightly. While his fights against Edgar Berlanga and William Scull have been lacklustre, he suffered a massive upset in his highly publicised showdown against Terence Crawford.

This has undoubtedly dealt a major blow to Alvarez’s legacy, one which he had painstakingly built up and fiercely guarded.

Meanwhile, with a host of impressive performances over the past few years, Benavidez has been building his legacy. And according to the 28-year-old, that is his major goal currently.

“I’m focused right now on building my legacy. Yeah, everyone wants to see me and Canelo. It’s the fight that could break records,” he said.

“He Should Face Me”

With Alvarez’s legacy under attack, Benavidez feels that there is only one way for the ‘Mexican Monster’ to redeem himself. Man up and step inside the ring for the fight that the Mexican fans are waiting for.

“I don’t know what he’s looking for; if he wants money and people’s respect, he should face me. I’m not saying he’s afraid of me. But I’m ready, and if we face each other, I will beat him,” he said while also adding that it is one of his dream matchups.
