David Benavidez Hopes His ‘Star Power’ Will Get Him Canelo

‘El Bandera Roja’ David Benavidez (29-0, 24 KOs) recently secured a sensational victory against Oleksandr Gvozdyk(20-2, 16 KOs) in his first fight in the light division, in turn, winning the vacant WBC interim light heavyweight title. Meanwhile, he has long been eyeing a fight against pound-for-pound superstar Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez (61-2-2, 39 KOs). Benavidez recently issued a new call out to Alvarez, hoping his newfound “star power” would prove lucrative for the Guadalajaran.

In his post-fight interview, Benavidez further cemented his decision to fight Alvarez. Despite his light-heavyweight victory, he mentioned that he had his eyes set on the mandatory super middleweight world championship shot.

“I’ve been trying to get that fight with Canelo for a long, long time. As you can see, I got the star power now. People love the way I fight and interact with me really well. That’d be a really big fight. I think everybody wins — the world of boxing wins, the fans win,” he said.

Benavidez went on to take further digs at Alvarez, stating that he was all talk and too afraid to back up what he said.

“It’s a fight that we got to get going on. If he really believes that he’s the best in the world, then come beat me and come shut me up. I’m going to keep showing you guys why I’m the ‘Mexican Monster,’ he said. “I want to be that dominant fighter,” he said, “that dominates both weight classes.”

“Dominated Every Single Round”

While the Alvarez fight is undoubtedly on his mind, it certainly hasn’t taken his eyes off the victory at hand. During the post-fight interview, he was asked if the victory had emboldened him to face the Beterbiev-Bivol winner.

“Yeah, he has a lot of experience. I went in there, and I dominated every single round, even with a cut and two messed up hands. That speaks volumes about my game. I’m just happy to keep contending in this weight class,” he said.
