The long-awaited battle of the Davids looks to take place in early 2025. Sources close to the situation have told FightsATW that the light heavyweight fight between interim WBC champion David Benavidez and interim WBA champion David Morrell will take place on February 1 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, NV.
Late last night on X, ESPN’s Salvador Rodriguez tweeted, “On February 1 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, David Benavidez will face David Morrell. It’s possible that a formal press conference announcing the fight can take place next week in California.” This comes after TGB Promotions placed a hold on the date with the Nevada State Athletic Commission a few weeks ago. Although there were rumors that the fight would be a doubleheader that would also feature Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis vs. Lamont Roach, according to sources close to the situation, that does not appear to be the case and Tank will headline his own PPV.
Benavidez (29-0, 24 KOs) only gloved up once this year, and that was against Oleksandr Gvozdyk in June, where he scored a unanimous decision victory. Benavidez has been relatively active throughout his career, and the last time he had only one fight in a calendar year was in 2020 during the pandemic. Gvozdyk was no easy fight for Benavidez, who suffered a rib injury, according to reports after the fight.
Benavidez and his team have been in a war of words with Morrell in the last two years and although the fight didn’t make sense financially back then, it does now as they look to settle things in the ring come February 1.
Morrell (11-0, 9 KOs) also only had one fight in 2024, an August bout against Radivoje Kalajdzic. Although Morrell earned a unanimous decision, he did not look like the same fighter that dominated at super middleweight. That night, he debuted as a light heavyweight and needed to rely on his Ring IQ more than his power. Morrell has been calling for this Benavidez fight, and although he did not get it at super middleweight, he will now get it at 175 in a unification of interim titles.
