David Benavidez lived up to the “Monster” moniker by destroying Gilberto Ramirez at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, NV.
Benavidez (32-0, 26 KOs) stopped Gilberto Ramirez (48-2, 30 KOs) in the sixth round of their fight, as Ramirez’s right eye was shut from Benavidez’s combinations. After the fight, Benavidez called for a fight against Canelo Alvarez or Dmitry Bivol. Benavidez has become a superstar with his latest performance.
In the opening round, these two fighters wasted no time, as Benavidez aggressively threw the 1-2 combination off the front foot. Ramirez was a little more patient but calculated with his right jab and straight left. Toward the end of the round, Benavidez landed an eight-punch combination that lit up the T-Mobile Arena.
The second round looked like the sparring clip Golden Boy released earlier in the week. Benavidez would land a hard four-punch combination, and then Ramirez would return fire with a combination of his own. In the last 20 seconds of the round, Benavidez landed a five-punch combination that buckled Ramirez. Benavidez followed it with a right uppercut just before the bell.
Benavidez was relentless with his five-to-six punch combination. Ramirez took them and would land a big left hook, but toward the end of the round, Ramirez appeared buzzed from all the combinations. The fourth round may be the one that goes down as the moment Benavidez arrived at cruiserweight. He dominated, and when he landed one of his blistering combinations, Ramirez could not take it anymore. He fell onto the ropes, and Benavidez threw another combination, forcing Ramirez to take a knee right before the end of the round. Ramirez beat the count and walked to his corner.
Ramirez, being the warrior that he is, came roaring back in the fifth, landing combinations of his own that forced Benavidez onto the back foot. Ramirez was doing great work from midrange, but in spots, Benavidez would load up and land a right hook to Ramirez’s head and body, which would slow him down. It was a big round for Ramirez, but his right eye began to swell up after it.
In the sixth round, Benavidez landed a left hook to Ramirez’s already-swollen right eye, forcing Ramirez to take a knee. Ramirez signaled to the referee that he did not want to continue because his eye was almost shut.
