David Benavidez’s Team Hopes to See an Edgar Berlanga Victory

Edgar Berlanga (22-0, 17 KOs) has a new ally. ‘The Chosen One’ will soon test his mettle for Mexican boxing legend Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez’s (61-2-2, 39 KOs) WBA, WBC, and WBO super middleweight titles at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. As the fight date quickly approaches, it looks like Berlanga has the support of David Benavidez (29-0, 24 KOs) and his team.

“I wish Berlanga can beat Canelo so he can take over the belts and maybe we can have more opportunities. Because right now, Canelo does what he wants and fights who he wants. People don’t like that anymore. The fights he’s getting are not interesting or exciting,” Benavidez’s father, Jose Benavidez Sr., said in an interview with BoxingScene.

Benavidez has been long eyeing an Alvarez fight. However, with the fight showing no sign of reaching fruition, team Benavidez hopes Berlanga’s win will give them more opportunities to aim for the titles. ‘The Mexican Monster’ had recently suffered injuries after going the distance with Oleksandr Gvozdyk (20-2, 16 KOs). Benavidez Sr. mentioned that his son was on the road to recovery.

“Everything is going well. He’s letting his hands heal. We’re looking for an opponent. It has to be an exciting fighter. It has to be somebody good because David is an exciting fighter. We care about giving people good fights. We want to fight the best in 50/50 fights. We want to make history. And to do that, you have to fight the best,” he said. “Beterbiev and Bivol are the only guys we want to fight out there.”

“It Is An Easy Fight For Me”

Like Benavidez, there is another fighter who has been long eyeing the Alvarez payday, Terence Crawford (41-0, 31 KOs). Talking to Manouk Akopyan, he mentioned that he was anticipating an easy matchup.

“You know, what we saw in the last fight with him [against Israil Madrimov], I think that’s why there are weight classes. That’s what I think. It’s an easy fight for me,” he said.
