Deontay Wilder Opens Up About Falling ‘Out of Love’ With Boxing

The “Bronze Bomber” Deontay Wilder (43-3-1, 42 KOs) is all set to test his mettle in a sensational showdown against Chinese boxing superstar Zhilei Zhang (26-2-1, 21 KOs). However, Wilder’s last few runs inside the ring were not in his favor, with him facing losses in three of his last four fights, including two knockouts against Tyson Fury (34-1-1, 24 KOs). Wilder recently shared a heartfelt testimony on falling out of love with the sport of boxing.

In an interview, Wilder revealed that his fight against Zhang is a chance for him to redeem himself after losing to Joseph Parker (35-3,  23 KOs). “Either you have the fighting spirit, or you don’t, and I’m the type of person, I have it. I don’t have to be mad at you. I don’t have to dig up anything that you said. It will never go anywhere, it’s just tamed,” he said.

He, however, quickly added that everyone wants the “monster to come out” and witness his untamed side. But, when they witnessed it, they felt that it was too messy for boxing. This was when he opened up about how his prior losses affected his mindset as a boxer.

“I fell out of love at one point in time, and I’ve had to regain it. I’m a very mature, intelligent man, so when it comes to certain things, this is business,” Wilder said. “I can smile with my enemies, I can laugh with my enemies, I can eat, I can hunt my enemies. I got mouths to feed.”

“No Pressure At All”

As he stands at the threshold of the Zhang fight, there is no denying that Wilder’s fans are hoping to see an explosive performance. Talking to DAZN, Wilder delved into how he is dealing with the massive weight on his shoulders.

“There’s no pressure at all. I’ve been successful inside of the ring. I’m more successful outside of the ring,” he said.

Wilder also revealed that he has a lot of things to focus on other than boxing, and this fight will decide whether the heavyweight division will witness him fight again.

“But I’m very confident in what I’m gonna do Saturday night. The Bronze Bomber is back,” he said.
