Former WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder looks to get back to his winning ways as he headlines a show in Wichita, KS, on Friday night.
The 39-year-old Wilder (43-4-1, 42 KOs) will be facing veteran Tyrrell Herndon (24-5, 15 KOs) in a scheduled 10-round fight. Although this seems like a layup for Wilder, this is boxing, and given his past fights, it could be the night he turns into an old man. Is Herndon the opponent to do that to Wilder?
A Crossroads Fight For Wilder?

Since making his debut in 2008 as an Olympic Bronze medalist, Wilder brought a level of excitement that the heavyweight division lacked for years. His knockouts were viral before the term ‘viral’ was even coined. The biggest fight in boxing at the time, which was between Wilder and Anthony Joshua, was explored but never signed, leaving tons of fans disappointed. Then, in 2018, Wilder faced Tyson Fury and stumbled upon a rivalry that will be discussed for many years to come.
They would face each other three times, but each fight saw a piece of Wilder left in the ring. Although he had that cannon of a right hand, Wilder was getting hurt more and more, leading to fans questioning if he still had it. Then he viciously knocked out Robert Helenius in October 2022, and the talk was that Wilder was back. Unfortunately, he would only fight once in 2023 and 2024, which was a unanimous decision loss to Joseph Parker and a fifth-round TKO loss against Zhilei Zhang. It’s been a year since Wilder has been in the ring, so there are many questions about what he has left, given he’s coming off two consecutive losses.
Wilder now faces Herndon, and there is only one thing he has to do to win, and it’s no secret: land the right hand while being in his wide stance. At this stage of his career, a decision will not move the needle for him. Wilder needs another viral knockout to land one last big-money fight before he calls it a career.
Will Tyrell Herndon Allow Himself To Be The “Sacrificial Lamb?”

Herndon, from San Antonio, TX, is a ten-year veteran with a three-fight win streak. That and being a formidable opponent is what got him to this fight with Wilder. It wasn’t that long ago (October 2023) when he was stopped in the second round during his fight with heavyweight prospect Richards Torrez Jr. Wilder is twice as devastating a puncher as Torrez, so Herndon will have to do his best to avoid being stopped like he was against Torrez.
How does Herndon pull off the miracle? Wilder’s kryptonite is pressure. When opponents have made Wilder move back without allowing him to plant his feet and land that right hand, they have been successful. Additionally, Herndon must be defensively sound throughout the entire fight. Can he score the upset? It’s possible, especially if Wilder turns into a grandpa on Friday night. That’s why they fight the fights. With this year being the year of the underdog, Herndon will strive to add his name to the growing list in 2025.
