Junior welterweight maestro Devin Haney (31-0. 15 KOs) is the talk of the town after his recent victory against Regis Prograis (29-2, 24 KOs). Meanwhile, there have been hushed discussions about the future fights for the champ. Haney recently weighed in on potentially facing junior welterweight superstar Ryan Garcia (24-1, 20 KOs) and lightweight Gervonta Davis (29-0, 27 KOs).
Haney faced Prograis in a rather one-sided affair at the Chase Center in San Francisco. At the end of the 12 rounds, he was declared the winner by decision, earning him the WBC junior welterweight title.
In the post-fight interview, ‘The Dream’ accused ‘Tank’ Davis of refusing to fight him.
“Tank don’t want to fight. If he really wanted to fight, he would be trying to build up the fight,” he said. “Instead of trying to knock it down or say I’m only selling because of this or that.”
Haney further mentioned that if Tank wanted to fight him, he’d call it a “big fight and the best fight for boxing” rather than talking down about the matchup. However, he added that he’s ready to fight ‘Tank’ regardless.
“I don’t know. I want to talk to my dad and see what’s next. I want to do a fight at 147,” Haney said about his future fights. “But there’s a lot of big fights at 140. I’m into making the biggest, best fights in the sport of boxing.”
Haney’s father and trainer, Bill Haney, also pitched in by asking fans not to believe the “lies” being spread by Davis and his team.
Should Ryan Garcia get his boxing gloves ready?
Haney is Good no doubt but I know him all to well and I will beat him. Good stuff tonight congrats but this year we are going to run it!!! 😤
— RYAN GARCIA (@RyanGarcia) December 10, 2023
‘KingRy’ is undoubtedly among the most iconic names in the junior welterweight division, and this was further cemented with his recent victory against Oscar Duarte. Haney also spoke about the possibility of facing Garcia in the ring.
“That’s a possibility, that’s a mega-fight. I’ve been calling out Ryan for years now,” he said. “And it’s good to hear that he finally wants to fight. It sucks that it came after he took an L (his fight against ‘Tank’ Davis).”
He added that Garcia has now expressed interest in Haney by calling him out for a fight and that he wishes to make it one of the biggest fights that the division has seen.
