Devin Haney vs. Regis Prograis: Preview & Prediction

Devin Haney has relinquished his lightweight gold in an effort to capture a world championship at junior welterweight. He must get past WBC titleholder Regis Prograis if he wants to succeed.

Haney’s bid for gold in another weight class will be held inside the Chase Center in San Francisco, California, on December 9. “The Dream” has revealed plans to capture gold at junior welterweight and move on to win a world championship at 147 pounds.

Up to this point, Haney has garnered a perfect pro boxing record of 30-0, with 15 of those wins ending via KO or TKO. Prograis enters his WBC title defense with a record of 29-1, scoring 24 KO or TKO victories.

Devin Haney vs. Regis Prograis Preview

I’ll be honest, as harsh as this may sound, I’m kind of out on Regis Prograis’ chances here after seeing his lackluster fight against Danielito Zorrilla back in June. Matchroom Boxing’s Eddie Hearn tried covering for Prograis after the fight, claiming Zorrilla didn’t show up for his big opportunity, but that isn’t good enough.

Prograis had developed the reputation of being the boogeyman at junior welterweight. Still, he was exposed in the Zorrilla fight for being unable to lure his opponent into a firefight and struggling to cut off the ring.

Devin Haney is miles better than Zorilla, and if Prograis couldn’t make things a dogfight against his last opponent, I fail to see how he can do it against Haney. I expect Haney, who enters with a four-inch reach advantage, to use his superior boxing skills to outclass Prograis for 12 rounds.

It isn’t all doom and gloom for Prograis, as I believe he will be a better version of himself than in the Zorrilla fight. I just don’t think he’ll be able to touch Haney much with anything significant. Prograis’ best bet is to make Haney do some inside fighting. I don’t think it happens unless “The Dream” lets his ego get ahead of him.

Can Prograis play the role of a bully to make things uncomfortable for Haney? It would be the junior welterweight champion’s best bet for a successful title defense to use that pressure and force Haney to trade. I don’t expect Haney to take the bait.

Let’s just hope this one isn’t a bore.
