WBC super lightweight champion Devin Haney (31-0-1, 15 KOs) is out for blood. He might have gotten his undefeated record back after Ryan Garcia (24-1-1, 20 KOs) failed his drug test. But he is far from satisfied. Now, he calls for Garcia to be banned for life, stating that his actions were ethically unbecoming of a boxer.
Haney was a guest on the latest episode of The MMA Hour hosted by Ariel Helwani. In conversation, he opened up about the failed drug test and Garcia’s suspension.
“I don’t think cheating should be in the sport of boxing. If I felt that, shit, I’d be cheating myself. If you get caught cheating, I think you should be banned for life. Because we literally go in and put our life on the line each time we step in that ring, and we see guys get killed in the ring,” he said.
Haney further mentioned that Garcia might have been intimidated by the prospect of fighting him, which pushed him to take performance enhancers. It also shed light on the fact that Garcia had never tested positive previously. “But against me, he did. It’s no coincidence. He must obviously have felt the threat from me, and all of a sudden, he’s acting like we’ve never seen him acting before. He was covering his a*s just in case he lost, and he was going to play the crazy role,” he added.
“Devin’s Not Like Us”
Meanwhile, Garcia has not forgotten his scuffle with Haney. In fact, it now looks like he has now taken their beef to Drake-Kendrick Lamar-esqe proportions.
Garcia recently took a dig at Haney while freestyling along the lines of Lamar’s “Not Like Us.”
“Yeah, Devin’s not like us. He’s so weird. So gay. What about you? Once you get clean with this little guy, everyone supposedly knows,” he rapped. Garcia further went on to question Haney’s prowess as a boxer.
“On the announcement, man, I’m going to turn it up a notch. I’m going to start telling you guys unless I really give a sh*t again. I’m going to tell the truth. You all know that sh*t,” he said.
