Eddie Hearn Asks Not To Jump The Gun on Anthony Joshua’s Future

It has barely been a few days since Anthony Joshua’s (29-4, 26 KOs) tragic accident in Nigeria, which caused the deaths of two of his closest friends, but the questions from fans and the boxing community asking for updates show no sign of stopping. Matchroom boss Eddie Hearn came in with a message for the update hunters.

Speaking to FightHubTV, Hearn admonished fans and journalists who have been persistently seeking news about Joshua and his future.

“I think we live in a world today where everyone feels like they deserve to know how he’s feeling and what’s next. I’m getting calls every day from media, like ‘Can you give us an update on his career?’ It’s like, are you serious?” he said.

Moreover, he was extra stern about people giving Joshua the desperately needed space as he tries to find his footing after the tragedy.

“Right now, probably whilst he’ll need strength around him, right now he should be left alone to recover physically and emotionally and spiritually. Anything you hear about his career, until you hear it from AJ, don’t believe it,” he said.

When asked about Joshua’s injuries, he did not hesitate to admit that it was a “tragic accident” and that Joshua would need considerable time to recover both physically and mentally. Additionally, he reminded people not to press Joshua about the incident, urging them to give him time to share it on his own accord.

“For me, I find it a little bit disrespectful to even, I know it’s my job to speak on his behalf sometimes, but this is not boxing. You know, this is life, and this unfortunately the very, very sad side of life,” he said. “Right now, there’s no comment on AJ’s career until we have an opportunity for that time to come where a conversation should take place, and that’s nowhere near happening right now.”

“We’re Not Interested In The Future”

In fact, Hearn does not even want to think about what the future holds for Joshua. Instead, he wishes to focus on Joshua’s healing, both physically and mentally.

“This is a time for faith and prayer and healing for Anthony. Physically, spiritually, emotionally, you’ve got to give him time. We’re not interested in the future,” he said while talking on the Matchroom boxing page.

“We’re interested in Anthony and his well-being, and obviously, the well-being as much as possible of the friends and family that are affected by this tragic incident.”
