Eddie Hearn Looks to Sign Shakur Stevenson: ‘He’s Been Promoted Terribly’

Three-division world champion Shakur Stevenson (21-0, 10 KOs) is a phenomenal boxer, and that’s putting it lightly. However, both the boxing fraternity and fans would agree in unison that he rarely pitted against the cream of the crop, those high-profile fights that would undoubtedly propel him to boxing superstardom. Matchroom boss Eddie Hearn recently opened up about wishing to sign Stevenson, who believes has been “promoted terribly.”

Hearn was talking to FightHub TV. In conversation, he delved into the prospect of signing Stevenson. Notably, he is currently signed to Bob Arum’s Top Rank. However, he is set to become a free agent after the last fight in his contract on July 6. “I think Shakur is pound-for-pound, one of the best fighters in the world. He’s maybe unbeatable; maybe he is that good. But I think he’s been promoted terribly,” he said.

Hearn mentioned that Stevenson’s promoter had not given him enough opportunities to become a commercially successful boxer. Moreover, he stated that Stevenson would also make a great addition to Matchroom’s stable of fighters. “Shakur should be a massive star, but he is not. I think he’s a great fighter. I think he would be an incredible addition to the Matchroom team, and if he’s available, we will definitely be having a conversation. Whether it works for both of us, we have to see,” he said.

“My Time Will Come”

Stevenson has long been eyeing a fight against Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis (30-0, 28 KOs). However, Davis seems to have completely sidelined him for a fight against Vasiliy Lomachenko (18-3, 12 KOs). On the other hand, Stevenson wishes to remain confident in his future matchups.

“Honestly, I don’t care. It is what it is. I’m doing this for me. I’m not doing this for money or clout. I don’t give a f**k about that s**t. I know that my time will come. Tank Davis has nowhere else to go but to fight me. At the end of the day, me and him will have to fight, and that’s my opportunity,” he said in an interview with BoxingScene.

Will signing with Matchroom turn the tables for Stevenson? Only time will tell.
