In a few days, pound-for-pound king Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez (61-2-2, 39 KOs) will put his WBA, WBC and WBO super middleweight titles on the line against Edgar Berlanga (22-0, 17 KOs). While Berlanga acknowledges the champ’s skillset and experience, he certainly believes he is not a fighter that Canelo should take lightly.
Berlanga recently sat down for a casual conversation with DAZN Boxing, where he delved into his training, his upcoming fight, and more. In conversation, he was asked if the age difference between the duo would give him an advantage, a question which ‘The Chosen One’ affirmed with a response. Notably, Berlanga is 27, while Canelo is 34.
However, he quickly added that he would not forget the fact that Alvarez is a legend. He is a fighter who has a treasure trove of experience under his belt. “Legends can make mistakes too. A 1000 percent. He can’t slip up either cuz I’m a guy that’s dangerous. Just like he’s dangerous, I’m dangerous too. But with us we’re minimizing a lot of mistakes that could happen on September 14, where he could try to execute on it. You know what I’m saying? We have to limit those open doors,” he said.
Berlanga further mentioned that he would tread cautiously during the fight due to Canelo being an experienced fighter and having faced some of the biggest names in the sport. “You know it’s discipline man. With a guy like Canelo, like you say, you can’t go in there and swing for the fences and think I’mma land on him. Cuz his IQ is crazy, you know. He has great defense. So, at that level, it’s about setting it up. And that’s what we’ve been working on,” he added.
“I don’t think he’s going to win”
Berlanga certainly seems to be confident in his prospects against Canelo. However, Alvarez’s sparring partner, Kyrone Davis, is almost certain that Berlanga is setting himself up for failure.
“I don’t think Berlanga has much of a shot in that fight. I don’t think he’s going to win,” he said in an interview with YSM Sports Media. He said the key to the fight is the IQ. I think that’s true, but I don’t think that’s on his side, especially not in this fight against a guy that has all the accolades and been in there with every kind of style. I don’t think that is it.”
