Edgar Berlanga Wants To ‘Definitely Retire’ Canelo Alvarez

The super-middleweight division needs a new face, according to Edgar Berlanga(22-0, 17 KOs). In a few days, ‘The Chosen One’ will face pound-for-pound superstar Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (61-2-2, 39 KOs) in a potentially sensational showdown at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. With Alvarez’s WBA, WBC, and WBO super middleweight titles on the line, Berlanga hopes to become the new titan on the pedestal at 168. As the fight date quickly approaches, Berlanga revealed his plans to “retire” Alvarez and take over the division.

“Yeah, I want to definitely retire him, for sure. That’s my goal. And I’m not trying to disrespect him; he a legend, but at the end of the day, we got to go in there, and we got to fight, we got to tussle, and we got to do what we got to do,” he said in an interview with TMZ Sports. Berlanga further shed light on Alvarez’s statements from his previous fights, where he had vowed to knock out his opponents, albeit unsuccessfully. It sure looks like the NABO super middleweight titleholder wants to score where his upcoming opponent couldn’t.

“He’s been saying in his last three, four fights that he’s going to knock somebody out in the seventh round or eighth round and he never did that. I feel right now the sport of boxing needs a new face, they need excitement, they need knockouts, they need somebody that’s going to bring that energy into the sport of boxing,” he said.

“This Is Going To Be Our Breadwinner”

Berlanga certainly has his game plan all set for his fight against Alvarez. And it looks like there is one particular move that he is placing his unceasing trust on.

“This is going to be our breadwinner, the jab right here. To land a big punch, you got to set it up,” he said in a conversation with DAZN Boxing. “Guys like him at that level, you can’t go out there and just try to throw bombs. He’s going to see it. He’s going to execute on that. So, it’s about setting up, being smart in that ring, and having good discipline.” Berlanga also believes his fight against Alvarez is the “opportunity of a lifetime,” and he will do everything in his power to become the division’s king.
