Edgar Berlanga’s Trainer Hints at Plan to Beat Canelo Alvarez

Pound-for-pound superstar Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (61-2-2, 39 KOs) will be ringing in the Mexican holiday weekend with a showdown against the NABO super middleweight champ, Edgar Berlanga (22-0, 17 KOs). ‘The Chosen One,’ who will challenge Alvarez for his WBA, WBC, and WBO super middleweight titles, is currently in camp in preparation for the fight. With the training underway, Berlanga’s trainer, Marc Farrait, divulged details about the team’s game plan ahead of the fight.

Episode one of Berlanga Camp: Chasing Greatness gave an up close and personal look at the fighter’s training regimen in the mountains of Boulder, Colorado. Giving an update on his condition, Farrait said, “Edgar’s looking good. He’s pretty much ahead. His weight looks good, his conditioning looks amazing and today we’re going to do a lot of quick-twitch muscles in regard to a lot of catch and shoots.”

He further revealed that Berlanga has been focusing on maintaining his distance during the fight and keeping his leverage. Moreover, he was also working on staying out of traps to make sure that he gets over after he throws a combination. “And make sure that that lead hand is always out. Keeping Canelo as much at bay as possible,” he said. “Everybody that beat him convincingly beat him with a jab,” Berlanga says. “And distance.” In February, Berlanga was last seen dishing out an impressive TKO against Padraig McRory (18-1, 9 KOs).

“He’s Going To Need A Really Good Camp”

Alvarez, on the other hand, is his usual confident self. As the fight date approaches, the Guadalajaran is convinced that his skill set and raw power will prove challenging to Berlanga during the fight, and he even hinted at a potential knockout in the books.

“He’s good, he’s strong, he’s young, he’s hungry. But it’s nothing new for me. I been in there with all kinds of fighters, difficult fighters, strong fighters, and I’m just going to go in there and do my business,” he said in an interview with TMZ Sports. Alvarez further mentioned that he is looking to do his best on fight night and inflict the maximum pain possible.

“I’m going to try to let him to feel so much pain and then knock out him. I don’t know what round. He already know, and he’s going to need a really good camp, so I hope he prepares himself really well because he’s going to need it,” he said.
