This past weekend at the Money in Bank PLE (Premium Live Event), wrestling legend John Cena announced that he will officially retire from the business next year, making WrestleMania 41 his last appearance wearing the tee shirt and jean shorts. Although this was something the WWE Universe anticipated happening at any moment as Cena grew his stock in Hollywood, the announcement still tugged at the fans’ emotional heartstrings. Shortly after, everyone on social media started speculating what these last nine months could look like for the 16-time champion. If there were ever a moment to live out a fantasy matchup, it would be now, and some way, somehow, it needs to be against Kenny Omega.
This seems to be something that feels like a long shot, but one can argue that in the Triple H Era of WWE, nothing is out of the realm of possibility, especially when Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson sits on the Board of Directors for TKO. There was a moment in 2019 when Omega became a free agent, and there were discussions of him joining WWE back then, but nothing materialized, and he ended up joining Cody Rhodes & The Young Bucks in getting AEW (All Elite Wrestling) off the ground. Before he went to AEW, the talks appeared real, and there were fantasy bookings all over the internet, as the potential matchups were endless. All hope was lost when AEW made their official announcement with Omega in attendance and took a stance against WWE.

According to Dave Meltzer, with Omega being injured often, that time away from the ring has been added to the end of his expiring contract, which would have ended in January 2023. Omega’s current contract situation is unknown, but the biggest question will be what he does when he is healthy and ready to get back. I’m not saying a full departure from AEW, but if somehow Tony Khan and Triple H can come to a mutually beneficial agreement, then why not have Cena vs Omega as the main event at night one in next year’s WrestleMania? It would be the perfect sendoff for Cena as he faces the man who was just as big of a star in the eyes of the wrestling community as himself outside of WWE. Omega is on the Mount Rushmore from that era in many wrestling circles which would include Cena, The Rock & “Stone-Cold” Steve Austin.
Cena has always been about what is best for business, and a fantasy matchup like this would be equivalent to what Ric Flair vs. Hulk Hogan was when they met for the first time at WCW’s Bash at the Beach in 1994. Yes, that didn’t happen when it needed to, but everyone embraced it when it did as they knew what it meant for the wrestling fans and culture. The same can be said about Cena and Omega, who are past their physical primes, but sharing the ring closes the chapter of that era. Some would argue that this benefits AEW more than it would WWE, but in the end, the fans are the ones everyone is trying to please, and if The Rock listens to the fans as he says he does, then this match must happen.
What Does The Buildup for John Cena vs Kenny Omega Look Like?

For this to be mutually beneficial, Cena must truly enter the forbidden door and show up to an AEW PLE towards the end of the show. You do a lights off, then lights on, and have Cena and Omega across from each other in the ring. Cena would have a confused look on his face, wondering how he got there, and Omega would be staring him down while making the hand gesture of a gun pointed towards Cena. It would emulate how Taz and Sabu finally met in ECW many years ago. Once the lights go back off and turn back on, Cena will be gone, leaving everyone with questions.
Then Omega and Cena would cut promos at their respective companies (Omega in AEW & Cena in WWE), and it would build towards a main event at WrestleMania 41. Omega would walk to the ring at Allegiant Stadium with his vintage New Japan Pro Wrestling outfit, while Cena would come with his tee shirt and shorts. The feeling of nostalgia would be through the roof and they would have to take the first five minutes in the middle of the ring to take it all in. Ultimately, Cena would hit his finishers and pin Omega, putting a bow on an illustrious career.
My Three Cents
If this article reaches either John Cena, Kenny Omega, WWE, AEW, or all parties, make the match everyone secretly wants to see that we never got involving two of the biggest names in wrestling during their era. In the end, It will all be worth it and it gives Cena a proper wrestling send off.
