Fight With Tim Tszyu Came at The ‘Perfect Moment’, Admits Errol Spence Jr

In 10 days, Errol Spence Jr (28-1, 22 KOs) will make his long-awaited comeback, after a 3-year-long hiatus, with a showdown against Tim Tszyu (27-3, 18 KOs). And jumping straight into it with no warm-up, Spence is certain that this fight is the perfect one to mark his return.

Talking to Shawn Porter, as he sat with Tszyu for their face-to-face, the southpaw from Long Island revealed that the fight came at the optimum time as he was preparing for a comeback.

“This fight came at the perfect moment. This was the first time I started training continuously and kept waking up every day feeling like I was ready to come back. I didn’t want a tune-up, so when Tim Tszyu got brought up, I said I’ll fight him in Australia. That’s what I do. We’ve been doing it since the amateurs. This is nothing new to me. I enjoy it. I love to hear the fans booing. I’m ready for it,” he said.

As he enters this fight after an extended layoff, questions are bound to be raised about his timing and conditioning. While he remains one of boxing’s most technically complete and physically imposing welterweights, ring rust is a legitimate concern after such a long absence, especially following the punishment he absorbed in his loss to Terence Crawford.

However, fans might not have a reason to worry. News from his training camp revealed that Spence approached his preparation seriously, focusing on rebuilding his conditioning, refining his technique and ensuring he is physically healthy.

But how ready is he, now that the fight is right around the corner?

“Like I said to the reporters, people got questions on how is Errol Spence gonna show up. Is he 60 percent, 70 percent? Is he still good? So maybe I am being a little combative,” he said. But Spence Jr certainly had a subtle (or maybe not so subtle) warning for Tszyu. “Just be ready. I’m looking forward to coming to Australia and disappointing you and your fans.”

Spence Jr’s last fight was against Crawford. And now that he’s making a comeback, Crawford sure knows who he’s supporting.

“Imma be supporting Spence, rooting for him. I just like to support fighters. Of course I’m picking Spence to win,” he said while talking to Porter. “I told [Tsyzu] to his face.”
