For those in the media hoping to get a question or two in with WBA lightweight champion Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis (30-0, 28 KOs) at Wednesday’s media workout, they were left hanging as Tank spent four minutes inside Gleason’s Gym in Brooklyn, NY, before leaving the event.
It’s not uncommon for fighters to spend only a few minutes in the ring for their media workout, whether talking, shadow boxing or working the mitts. Typically, the fighters make themselves available to the media afterward for a set time before leaving the event. Davis leaving after doing the in-ring interview for the PBC (Premier Boxing Champions) YouTube live feed after being 45 minutes late is disappointing, especially for those in the media who likely came from long distances to be there for the event.
One long-time boxing insider told FightsATW that today’s actions by Davis likely means “the event is sold out or close to it.” That’s a good point as if the show is already sold out or close to it, and the interest is at an acceptable level, then why spend the extra time answering questions from the media in attendance? It makes sense, but if that was going to be the case, then someone should have put that memo out but then maybe not as many media members would’ve attended today’s event. The other factor is that Davis did a private media workout last week for influencers, and former athletes turned “media,” so maybe he didn’t feel the need to do it twice.

Either way, this plays into Davis’ star power, and he is doing it his way, like the Frank Sinatra hit song “My Way.” Saturday night at the Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn will be on fire, and if this year is truly his last, then this is the beginning of the end for the fighter who goes by the moniker of Tank.
By the way, it’s no coincidence that Floyd Mayweather Jr. stopped by The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon this week to promote his protein powder that was recently released when it happens to be Tank’s fight week. The closed-door tug-of-war continues between the Mayweather and Davis.

Here are the quotes from the two fighters that will light up the marquee at the Barclays Center on Saturday night.
GERVONTA DAVIS
“The atmosphere at Barclays is always amazing. I won my first championship here and I’m just excited to come back here to put on a great performance.
“Training in DC was great. It was fun. It brought the amateur style back.
“Roach is in for a rude awakening, for sure. He’s trying to psyche himself up, but it comes down to skill. Whoever is the most skilled fighter will be the winner.

“Knocking someone out feels like a home run, when it hits the sweet spot of the bat, and it goes far. That’s how it feels for me.
“I want to stay in the ring more this year, hopefully with three fights. Roach comes first, and then we figure it out the rest of the way.
“You’ll see fireworks. I’m sharp, fast and explosive. Lamont is sharp too. It’s going to be a banger, and the fans will be the true winners this Saturday night.”
LAMONT ROACH

“The stakes are higher, but I just want to go hard, that’s about it. I’ve trained to be in the best physical and mental shape I can possibly be in.
“I’ve been doing big fights since I started out as a pro. The (Bernard) Hopkins undercard, Canelo (Alvarez) undercards…and the list goes on. I’m no stranger to any of this, and it doesn’t affect me at all.
“At the end of the day, there’s mutual respect between each other. But if he’s going to troll, I’m going to troll.
“This is everything for me, and becoming a two-division champion would be a dream come true for me.”
