For weeks now, word has gone around that WBA lightweight champion Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis (29-0, 27 KOs) would be facing Frank Martin (18-0, 12 KOs) as part of a doubleheader which would be supported by David Benavidez (28-0 24 KOs) vs Oleksandr Gvozdyk (20-1, 16 KOs). The date wasn’t solidified, and it was rumored to be taking place in Houston, TX, but Davis cleared all that up with his most recent post on Instagram.
Davis posted “Blitz, Blitz, Blitz.. No One Bigger” along with a fight poster verifying the doubleheader, but the location is the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, NV. A fight card headlined by Davis and Benavidez merits a venue at the Las Vegas Strip which lands on the weekend of Father’s Day and Juneteenth. There is no doubt that this fight date will be circled a few times on the calendars of all fight fans.
Martin looks to prove that betting on himself by turning down Shakur Stevenson for this one against Davis was worth the risk. Davis will be fighting for the first time in 14 months which was against Ryan Garcia in a blockbuster event.
Benavidez will be moving up in weight to fight former light heavyweight champion Gvozdyk for the interim WBC title. Benavidez hopes that with a win on June 15, he can create more opportunities for bigger fights since the. One with Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez doesn’t look to materialize anytime soon.
The details surrounding this event will be available soon and posted here on FightsATW, so stay tuned.
