Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez Had Surgery For A ‘Medical Scare’

WBA cruiserweight world champion Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez (46-1, 30 KOs) was forced to undergo a medical procedure in Mexico, as he posted on his Instagram account.

God is great. Out of surgery & scheduled to make a full recovery. Had an unexpected medical scare, but glad I was able to receive immediate treatment. I appreciate all the calls & messages from everyone. Thank you all & I will be back stronger than ever. See you soon. #appendicitis #surgery #medical #boxing #champion

By looking at the hashtags, it appears that Ramirez had appendicitis and likely had to have it removed. The symptoms leading up to that type of procedure are painful, so Ramirez isn’t lying when he said he had a health scare.

The 32-year-old Ramirez from Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico, was in the ring in March when he fought 12 grueling rounds with Arsen Goulamirian (27-1, 19 KOs) to capture the vacant WBA cruiserweight crown. In that fight, Ramirez showed more of his toughness and the ability to successfully win a decision against a natural cruiserweight. Ramirez mentioned taking some time off after the fight before deciding what he would like to do next.

Some of the other champions in the division that can be options for Ramirez are IBF champ Jai Opetaia, WBC champ Badou Jack, and the winner between Chris Billam-Smith vs. Richard Riakporhe for the vacant WBO crown. For now, Ramirez will get some rest after his successful surgery before making any plans for his next opponent.
