It was a one-sided beatdown, and the fans in Nicaragua at the Alexis Arguello Arena got their pound of flesh from their hero. Roman ‘Chocolatito’ Gonzalez (52-4, 42 KOs) scored a huge tenth-round TKO over Rober Barrera (27-6, 17 KOs), which streamed live on ESPN+. Although Gonzalez, at 37, has seen his best days go by, he is still a fighter who can put enormous pressure on you by throwing a ton of punches. Whether or not Gonzalez stays at bantamweight will be a question answered in the weeks to come, but tonight, Gonzalez proved that he still has enough left for one or two big fights.

Barrera began the fight aggressively and was landing some clean shots on Gonzalez. Towards the middle of the first round, Gonzalez would warm up and land his straight right hand and multiple body shots, which caught Barrera’s attention. In the second round, Barrera started off strong again, but Gonzalez was savvy with his counterpunching ability and was able to land 4-5 punch combinations, which buzzed Barrera. Gonzalez would lean to his right and throw a left hook to the body and head, a combination that Barrera had no answer for.
Barrera did a great job of shifting and throwing combinations from an angle in the third round, but Gonzalez would land a straight right hand that would hurt Barrera. Gonzalez landed two more straight right hands and a left hook to the body as Barrera would be forced to hold. Gonzalez took the fourth round off, and Barrera increased his punch output. Gonzalez kept his high guard and mainly took everything Barrera had to offer. Gonzalez came out firing on all cylinders in the fifth round as he kept changing the levels of his punches with the straight right hand consistently landing on the head of Barrera. Towards the end of the round, Gonzalez hurt Barrera once again with his volume of punches.

Gonzalez continued to overwhelm Barrera with punches in bunches. Barrera appeared to be gassed throughout the sixth round. It was more of the same in the seventh round, but in the eighth, Gonzalez landed a sneaky left hook to the body that Barrera wasn’t ready for, which sent him down to the canvas for the first knockdown of the fight. Barrera got up and made it to the end of the round. Gonzalez was all over Barrera in the ninth round and landed a left hook to the head, causing Barrera to go down for the second time in the fight. Barrera survived the round, but he was clearly hurt.
Gonzalez put an enormous amount of pressure in the tenth round, and when he landed a right uppercut on Barrera’s head, the mouthpiece flew out. Gonzalez continued his overwhelming punches, forcing the referee to step in and stop the fight. Gonzalez earns the TKO victory in front of thousands of friends, family and fans from Nicaragua.
