Had To Learn It The Hard Way, Says A Thankful Ryan Garcia

Ryan Garcia (25-2, 20 KOs) will soon defend his WBC welterweight title against mandatory challenger Conor Benn (25-1, 14 KOs) at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. As fight night draws closer, he looked back at a career that not only brought him a lot of glory, but also a few painful lessons.

Talking from his training camp, Garcia reminisced about the expectations that fans had of him that he (at times) had a hard time living up to.

“A lot of people had a lot of expectations for me as I was coming up, ESPN prospect of the year, many other things as I was coming up, a lot of expectations. People kind of figured I would get here, but everything worked out the way it should be. A lot of character development, a lot of learning experiences from attention to being a professional in your sport,” he said. “For me, it’s like you got to learn it all on your own, and I’m at that place where everything came together. It just so happened to be.”

His words hit deep, acknowledging a journey as complicated outside the ring as it was inside it. Garcia rose through boxing with extraordinary speed, carrying the expectations of a young superstar while dealing with the pressures, making unavoidable (and a few avoidable) mistakes, and facing the consequences that came with it. His career has included painful setbacks, difficult personal moments, and periods when the spotlight seemed almost impossible to escape.

Rather than allowing those chapters to define him, he now speaks about them as part of the process of growing up. For Garcia, learning the hard way has meant discovering that talent opens the doors, not only to greatness but also to accountability. And now, having found that fire again, he doesn’t see himself stopping anytime soon.

“I’m just going to continue following the path I’m on right now, make the necessary adjustments, evolve so that my next fight I stay the same and even get better,” he said.

“Five Rounds And Below”

However, that doesn’t mean he wants anything less than an explosive Garcia spectacle. Talking during the same interview, he hinted that he was looking forward to a knockout finish.

“I’m here to make a statement. I’ve not been shy about that. I’ve said five rounds and below. That means I’m coming with mean intentions, and I’m not here to dance my way to a decision, but I’m also not here to be stupid, at the end of the day,” he said. “But would it be amazing? Yes.”
