Brian Norman Jr (28-0, 22 KOs) will be defending his WBO title on Saturday, as Devin Haney (32-0, 16 KOs) makes his welterweight debut. While many believe that Haney’s skillset will prove problematic for the 24-year-old, Norman Jr’s father, Brian Norman Sr, believes that his son is the one who should be feared on fight night.
In conversation with MillCity Boxing, Norman Sr. revealed that his son is planning to decimate all of Haney’s defences and look good while doing it.
“Against Ramirez, he ran around the ring. When Ramirez punched, he hit. I told Bill to fix that sh*t. It doesn’t matter because we’re punching through the guard,” he said.
There is no denying that when it comes to raw power and iron-fisted pugilism, Norman Jr is a level above Haney. However, like Norman Sr. mentioned, Haney is pretty adept at “running” around. A true example of the Tom-and-Jerry fights that Turki Alalshikh despises.
However, there is one thing that cannot be overlooked: while he might run around, he is also extremely proficient in avoiding getting hit. And with his movements and exceptional footwork, it is worth pondering if Norman Jr. will actually get those opportunities to land those punches and break Haney’s guard.
Norman Sr, on the other hand, isn’t worried one bit. He highlighted that all of Haney’s former opponents had suffered losses prior to facing him, which his unlike his son, who boasts of an unbeaten record. Expressing confidence in his son’s skills, he stated that Haney should actually look forward to getting knocked out.
“They say he has elite feet. His elite feet were against Jose Ramirez. One of the less punches thrown in a 12-round fight. His face is on the line. Haney is going to sleep. Every single fighter he fought had taken a loss,” he said.
“Handicapping The Fighter”
It certainly seems like it is a battle of the fathers, as Bill Haney has also come to the defence of his son. While both Norman Sr and the older Haney seem to be having their own scrap, the king of drama is certain that fight night will see his son handicap Norman Jr.
“We’re into handicapping the fighter from doing what he does best,” he said while talking to Seconds Out. “Until you are a well-balanced, perfect fighter, then you’ll probably have bad nights against Devin Haney. We knocked off all the old guys. Devin is the veteran in the division. He’s the most accomplished, most talented.”
