We have finally arrived to fight day, and Times Square in NYC will be the focal point of tonight’s DAZN PPV card headlined by Ryan Garcia (24-1, 20 KOs) facing Rolando “Rolly” Romero (16-2, 13 KOs) for the WBA regular welterweight title.
The card is filled with matchups that could be their own headliners, like WBO junior welterweight champion Teofimo Lopez facing Arnold Barboza Jr. and Devin Haney taking on Jose Ramirez. Instead, Ring Magazine, which Turki Alalshikh and Riyadh Season power, has put all three fights on the same card, making this one of the can’t miss events of the year.
There have been mixed reactions to the ring setup in Times Square as most of it is covered, with only about 300 invited attendees will be seated around the ring. Although early AI-created images, used as marketing kits, showed a scenario where fans would be seen all around the ring outside of the invited guests, the reality is that the spectacle will be the ring with the Times Square backdrop and not with the fans in awe with the event. Contrary to what social media influencers are posting on their accounts, Times Square isn’t “shut down,” as only the portion where the event is being held is blocked off. They purchased a few of the billboards to show the fight, which was likely expensive, but they didn’t “shut down” Time Square like New Year’s Eve does yearly.
