‘I’m Coming for You’: David Morrell Has a Message for ‘King’ David Benavidez

David Morrell Jr. (11-0, 9 KOs) is coming for David Benavidez (29-0, 24 KOs).

Morrell is set to face ‘El Bandera Roja’ in what would undoubtedly be a sensational light heavyweight showdown at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on February 1. With almost two years of calling out Benavidez, Morrell laughed off his claims of fighters not wanting to face him. And, now, with the fight right around the corner, he will certainly make sure that his wait was not in vain.

Talking at the first episode of Gloves Off, Morrell stressed that he has been calling out Benavidez for a long time, only for his callouts to fall on deaf ears. “I’ve been asking for Benavidez for too much time. Every time after Benavidez’s fights, he says, ‘I’m the boogeyman. No one wants to fight me.’ I say, ‘Bro, what are you saying? I’m here,” he said.

Benavidez’s last tango inside the ring was almost 8 months back when he won the vacant WBC interim light heavyweight title against Oleksandr Gvozdyk.

He mentioned that he had called Benavidez out almost two years prior when he fought in the undercard for the Gervonta Davis vs. Ryan Garcia showdown. While a response was barely in sight, Jose Benavidez Sr. trashed Morrell on social media when he fought Sena Agbeko at the Minneapolis Armory.

With all the drama that has undoubtedly gotten fans excited for the fight, Morrell has a message for his opponent. “You’re the King; get out of here. I’m coming for you,” he said. “I got everything – fast, power, defense, attack, legs that move. I got everything.”

Meanwhile, Morrell’s manager, Luis DeCubas, is confident about his performance against Benavidez. Talking to reporters, DeCubas claimed that Benavidez was “not that hard to hit with a fighting style which would rather put Morrell at ease.

“The guys made to order for Morrell,” he said. “If Benavidez can take this kid’s punches for 12 rounds, I’m going to respect Benavidez a lot and I would favor him over any light heavyweight in the world because this guy punches holes through walls. He’s got Sonny Liston’s hands.”
