In his own words, a 34-year-old Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez (61-2-2, 39 KOs) can beat a 24-year-old Alvarez.
The pound-for-pound will soon put his WBA, WBC and WBO super middleweight titles on the line in what is anticipated to be a sensational showdown against Edgar Berlanga (22-0, 17 KOs) at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. As the fight date approaches, the age difference between the fighters has become a topic of discussion among critics. On the other hand, Alvarez responded to his haters, revealing why he was still in his prime.
“I believe in my skills and my experience. I am a strong fighter. I am smart. I have a lot of talent. I know every style and everything about boxing,” he said while talking to BoxingScene. “I am ready to do whatever I want. I am winning by knockout, eight rounds or less.” Alvarez further mentioned that Berlanga will face his biggest danger yet on fight night. Moreover, he was also excited at the prospect of his opponent experiencing “the truth and face something different.”
A fight against Terence Crawford (41-0, 31 KOs) or David Benavidez (29-0, 24 KOs) is anticipated for Alvarez after his fight against Berlanga. While he is fully focused on his upcoming fight, Alvarez mentioned that he is ready to take on any opponent that comes his way. “I’m a strong fighter who has a lot of experience in this sport. I am still in my prime. This Canelo beats the 24-, 25-, 26-year-old Canelo. I love what I do. I still enjoy boxing. I still enjoy all of this, and that is motivation,” he said. “I don’t know when I’ll retire. I am just going fight by fight.”
“He Has Earned The Right”
With all the fighters lining up for an Alvarez payday, it sure is yet another Cinco de Mayo celebration for the champ. In fact, trainer John Pullman even believes that Alvarez has earned his right to choose his battles. “Canelo is someone who marches to the beat of his own drum. He’s earned the right to choose his fights. I respect how he’s independent and doesn’t just bend to others because of money. He’s taken risky fights and even suffered losses, which only adds to his credibility,” he said in an interview. He even compared Alvarez to a prime Mayweather and added that Berlanga would have a hard time during their fight.
