IBF (currently) and RING Magazine cruiserweight champion Jai Opetaia (29-0, 23 KOs) and his opponent, Brandon Glanton (21-3, 18 KOs), both made weight ahead of their fight, this Sunday on Paramount+ for the inaugural Zuffa Boxing title.
The word “currently” was in the above, as the IBF, on Friday night, unsanctioned the title fight and cited a violation of their rules as justification for their decision, along with the placement of the title during Friday’s press conference. Sources have told FightsATW that the official from the IBF was flown to Las Vegas and that Opetaia had already paid the sanctioning fees. The IBF stated in the letter that the belt will be vacant regardless of the outcome on Sunday night.
Opetaia still showed up with the belt on Saturday during the weigh-in and has stated that he will comply with the second-day weigh-in required by the IBF for their title fights. This may all be wishful thinking by Opetaia in hopes the IBF changes its mind, but that is a long shot at best. When Monday morning comes around, it is almost certain that the IBF’s page will reflect “vacant” for their cruiserweight title. Will this affect Opetaia’s psyche on fight night? Can Glanton score a win against possibly a distracted Opetaia? It’ll be interesting to see how this plays out.
