It must be said first and foremost that when the Paul brothers (Logan and Jake Paul) stepped onto the boxing scene, plenty of zealous fans were quite irate about it all. Fans felt it was unfair that mega social media celebrities would get the right to fight in pro boxing with no amateur experience or remote background in the sport. There was concern that they would tarnish the seriousness and purity of the sport and what it stands for. While there is definite justification for such reasoning, it has been tangibly evident that particularly Jake Paul has marked a difference. This difference is bound for memorable legacy prints for the future of boxing.
Jake Paul’s Influence on Boxing
Touching upon the aforementioned regarding Paul making a change in the sport, it is imperative to detail just a couple of Paul’s accomplishments. A huge move is the partnership deal with USA Boxing. The one-of-a-kind partnership involves Paul expanding the sport of boxing through working with amateurs, which is his passion. He wants his interest in the sport to grow even more globally, and he is geared towards the youth. He will mentor top talent and work alongside fighters representing the USA in the 2024 Olympics in Paris during their training at the Colorado Springs Olympic Training Center. Paul has also been a significant help to Amanda Serrano (46-2, 30 KOs) in signing her to his promotional company, Most Valuable Promotions. He also contributed to Serrano being the first female fighter to earn a million-dollar purse when she faced Katie Taylor (23-1, 6 KOs) at the Madison Square Garden in New York on April 30,, 2022. That night had fans on the edge of their seats in an action-packed fight where Serrano lost via split decision leaving fans clamoring for a rematch. Paul has also signed fighters such as hard-hitting Shadasia Green (13-1,11 KOs) and highly-skilled Ashton Sylve (10-0, 9 KOs). Paul has contributed so much to the sport outside of the ring in the few years he has been involved that it has undoubtedly drawn more attention to it.
Jake Paul’s Trajectory as a Pro Boxer
Jake Paul (8-1, 5 KOs) fought his first pro bout on January 30, 2020, in Miami, Florida, against YouTuber Ali Eson Gib, in which Paul won via knockout in the first round. Since then, his trajectory has consisted mainly of fighting former MMA pro fighters who have transitioned to pro boxing, except for Nate Robinson (former NBA Player) and Tommy Fury (10-0, 4 KOs), who gave Paul his first loss. Andre August (10-2, 5 KOs) who got knocked out by Paul in the first round and Fury, were the only pro fighters Paul has faced so far.
Jake Paul’s Competitive Nature
Paul has proven he is involved in the sport for much more than monetary gain. He genuinely loves it. To add, Paul has a natural tendency to be competitive. He wrestled in high school and reached a highly competitive level in competitions. The previously mentioned is exactly why he has expressed interest in competing as a pro-MMA fighter as he has in pro boxing. The challenging rush that combat sports provides is his second nature.
Jake Paul Pulls in Fans
In addition, Paul has shown that he has masses witnessing and purchasing his PPV events. His fight against Tommy Fury on February 26, 2023, in Saudi Arabia reportedly sold approximately 800,000 PPV buys. In addition, his fight against Nate Diaz (0-1) reportedly sold 450,000 PPV buys. It is clear that Paul has a huge following and those fans are more than willing to support his events.
Final Thoughts
The criticism Paul has received upon stepping foot in boxing is understood. However, he has been showing through time that his passion and love for the sport is real. He is influencing the younger generation towards the sport, tapping into their interest and raising intertest into it. It is safe to say that he deserves credit in the Boxing community.
