Jaron Ennis on Why Terence Crawford Should Go ‘Heavy’ Against Canelo

Jarron Ennis (33-0-1, 29 KOs) believes that Terence Crawford (41-0, 31 KOs) should get heavier before fighting Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (62-2-2, 39 KOs).

‘Bud’ is gearing up for one of the biggest showdowns of his career yet, against Alvarez at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on September 13. With the fight date closing, Ennis is predicting a victory for Alvarez, owing to the significant advantage of being at his weight class for longer. His solution? A potential “warmup fight” for Crawford before facing Alvarez.

Talking to FightHub TV, Ennis highlighted that it would be a good idea for Crawford to first fight another fighter at 160 to see how his body performs at that weight.

“I think Crawford should take a warmup fight at 160 just to get his body to fill with somebody a little bit bigger,” he said. “I know when you go up in weight, you’ve got to put that muscle on and be heavy. So, he might not want to take a fight because he’s trying to build up right now. I think he should to stay sharp. That way, he won’t have a long layoff.”

Crawford’s last outing was against Israil Madrimov at junior middleweight, while Alvarez’s last five fights were at super middleweight. With a potential 20-pound weight jump for Crawford and Alvarez’s expertise in the super middleweight division, Ennis has no difficulty picking a winner.

“You got to lean towards Canelo because he’s been at that weight for a long time. He’s been pinning big guys out. Crawford’s a little smaller. Canelo is really not a 168-pounder. He should be at 160, and he’s been hurting these guys. He be dropping these guys,” Ennis added. “These guys be way bigger than him come fight night. I know that for sure. They be close to 200 lbs, and he’s dropping those guys like that. It’s going to be a great fight.”

“Put My Money Where My Mouth At”

However, there are others who feel like Crawford will emerge as the winner of the fight, and Floyd Mayweather’s former manager, J Prince, happens to be one of them.

“I believe he beats Canelo. I’m going to put my money where my mouth at. Crawford is one of those guys,” he said. “Of course, you know, we can’t say anything bad about Canelo cuz he the top of the top two, but that’s that’s my opinion.”

Moreover, he also believes that the weight jump will have no “wear and tear” on Crawford. “I’ve witnessed watching him spar and watching him in the ring over the years, and he knows what he’s doing,” he said.
