What’s at stake for WBA bantamweight titleholder Antonio Vargas (19-1-1, 11 KOs) as he fights Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez (23-0, 16 KOs) on Saturday at the Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Arizona? The bout pits an all-time great in Bam against Vargas, who has had to make a career comeback to become a titleholder.

Bam’s legacy is already that of a Hall of Fame boxer. A word-of-mouth guy until a major opportunity to face former belt holder Carlos Cuadras, when Srisaket Sor Rungvisai was unable to fight him for their February 2022 date. Bam moved up from junior flyweight to junior bantamweight for the opportunity. It paid in dividends.

Bam would win a unanimous decision over Cuadras, then stop Rungvisai in his next bout. Rodriguez would move down to flyweight in 2023, ending the year by stopping Sunny Edwards. He would stop Juan Francisco Estrada in his return to junior bantamweight in 2024. Bam holds all but one of the junior bantamweight titles after defeating Fernando Daniel Martinez, but has opted not to wait for the winner of this past weekend’s bout between IBF titleholder Willibaldo Garcia Perez and Andrew Moloney, which saw the latter come out victorious.

Now, Bam will look to become a three-division titleholder. Rumors of a Naoya Inoue fight next year are circulating, as is the possibility of fighting for an undisputed title. Bam is now a consensus top-5 pound-for-pound fighter, up there with the likes of Inoue, Oleksandr Usyk, Shakur Stevenson, and Dmitry Bivol. A win over Vargas would further cement his claim to being the best of his era.

Antonio Vargas Can Prove He Belongs Amongst The Elite (Like In The Amateurs)

At one point in the mid-2010s, Vargas was Bam. It might sound silly, but he was among the country’s most well-respected amateurs and made the 2016 U.S. Olympic team. He was a high-profile signing for Top Rank Inc. Then he was knocked out by Jose Maria Cardenas on an unassuming undercard. The loss put Vargas out of sight and out of mind.

Since then, Vargas has rebuilt in Florida, where he is from, and over the past two years has established himself as a well-respected pro. He stopped Winston Guerrero in December 2024, with both fighters hitting the canvas. In his only fight last year, he battled Daigo Higa to a draw in July, with the bout taking place in Japan.

Vargas was once thought to have the potential Bam has shown. This is a moment to change his life. Vargas has the pedigree, but he has to apply his skills in the most important fight of his career.

Vargas can get dropped. That isn’t a great thing against Bam.

Bam is a master of angles, but he’s also a little stick of dynamite in the lower weight classes. The first battle will be Vargas’ durability, as I don’t question his talent, but one has to wonder how he handles the concussive blows of an all-time great.

Despite Vargas holding the title and Bam having never fought in this division, the odds heavily skew in Bam’s favor. It is both a testament to all he has accomplished and a question about Vargas’ long-term viability as a belt holder in the division
