John Cena Reveals Why His Retirement Was Inevitable

John Cena is a name etched in gold across the annals of wrestling history. With his iconic catchphrase “You can’t see me” and his trademark All-American physique, Cena didn’t just step into the ring; he dominated it. And now, as the countdown begins for SummerSlam, it also marks the end of an era. Cena is stepping away from the spotlight, and according to him, this retirement isn’t just a choice; it’s a necessity.

Talking at Stephanie McMahon’s What’s Your Story? Podcast, the legend delved into his career and why his retirement was necessary.

“A schedule like I was doing in 2013 would destroy me right now. It will ruin me and ruin my relationship, and that’s the tip of my spear. So, I gotta close a chapter, that’s it,” he said.

A career as legendary as his stature, Cena began his wrestling career in 1999 with a stint at Ultimate Pro Wrestling, where he was known as “The Prototype” and even went on to become the heavyweight champion.

While he made his unofficial WWE debut using the same name for SmackDown in 2000, he made his WWE television debut two years later on the June 27 episode of SmackDown by answering Kurt Angle’s open challenge.

What followed was a journey to superstardom and a place among the pedestals of wrestling greatness.

Meanwhile, the statement that Cena made at McMahon’s show was true. All this greatness came at a price; he even confessed to being an acute workaholic. In fact, during the podcast, he even recalled an incident from 2008, when he was at a dinner with his ex-wife (possibly Elizabeth Huberdeau). He revealed that while there, he received a call for an event, and he “literally threw some cash” at her and caught a plane to that event.

Now married to Shay Shariatzadeh since 2020, Cena believes that retirement is necessary for him to enjoy the little pleasures of life.

“I am here to live life. I am here to acknowledge the greatest gift that I have been awarded. Of all the privileges and gifts I have been awarded in my life, the greatest gift is waking up. And that is the tip of my spear. And right below that is my bride,” he said. “Why are you choosing to hang it up? You’re in shape. Life is good. You look good, you can still jump high, move fast.’ It will ruin me and ruin my relationship, and that’s the tip of my spear.”

“I Don’t Regret Any of That”

While his wrestling career at times led him to do questionable things, such as throwing cash at his ex and catching a plane, Cena does not believe in looking back at such moments with regret.

“I don’t regret any of that. I feel good that I can reflect on a mini moment like that,” he said. “I don’t regret anything. I wasn’t forced to do that. I did it under my own duress.”
