Kenny Omega To Will Ospreay on AEW Dynamite: ‘I Will Never Trust Someone Like You’

This week’s AEW Dynamite show was live from Knoxville, TN, and although leading up to it the show felt predictable, it was far from it. Challenges were issued that can be seen as a super match, titles changed hands and a chapter was added to a developing storyline. It was one of the best AEW Dynamite shows the company has put together so far in the new year.

Will Ospreay and Kenny Omega Kick Off Dynamite

Will Ospreay began the promo, which was moderated by Tony Schiavone, thanking Kenny Omega for meeting him on Dynamite. He immediately went into how things have changed within AEW since Omega’s time away recovering from his illness.

Omega quickly took the mic and said, “Stop.” Omega reminded him that he doesn’t have a short memory and remembers what Ospreay did to him at Forbidden Door. Omega would recall that Ospreay did what he did because he wanted to prove he was the best. Omega said he didn’t believe Ospreay was better than him back then and now.

The stinger from Omega was when he said, “Congrats on being number two because number one is standing right in front of you.” Omega continued, “I will never trust someone like you…bruv!” Then Don Callis came out to interrupt the promo between Omega and Ospreay.

Omega quickly ran up the ramp to get Callis, but Konosuke Takeshita came out of the back to attack Omega. Ospreay would look on from inside the ring until Kyle Fletcher came out to join Takeshita, forcing Ospreay to go to the aid of Omega. Brian Cage & Lance Archer came in to help Fletcher and Takeshita. The numbers game quickly became too much for Omega and Ospreay.

It was mayhem in the lobby area of the arena and the merchandise table took a beating with all of the slams it took. Ospreay and Omega did an insane spot from high up in the stands, which created an immediate pop among the crowd. Afterward, Omega issued a challenge by tag teaming with Ospreay to face Takeshita and Fletcher at AEW Grand Slam on February 15 in Australia.

The Hurt Syndicate Capture Gold

Private Party has held on to the AEW tag team titles since defeating the Young Bucks in October. All signs pointed towards them keeping the titles, but those were not the plans for this Dynamite.

The champs began the match red hot but that quickly changed when Lance Armstrong & Bobby Lashley started throwing Private Party all over the outside area. When they took things back into the ring, the Hurt Syndicate looked indestructible, leading to Lashley hitting his spear on Zay and getting the pin to win the tag-team gold.

Now that the Hurt Syndicate has gold around their waists, it’ll be interesting to see where they take this title run.

Swerve Strickland vs. AR Fox

This match was more about further adding to the storyline of Swerve Strickland and Ricochet. The match was a bit of a squash match until Ricochet made his way down to the ring to interfere before being confronted by Prince Nana. After the distraction, Swerve regained control of the match and landed the Swerve Stomp, which led to a successful pin of AR Fox.

After the match, Ricochet was in the back cutting a promo towards Swerve with a pair of scissors to Prince Nana’s throat. Swerve went running to the back but was not able to catch Ricochet.

Main Event: Cope vs. ‘The Bastard’ Pac

Cope began the match utilizing what would be considered “old school” wrestling moves against Pac. It’s a lost art but one that a wrestler like Cope can do well without it feeling like “Memphis.” The irony was that the Dynamite show was in Knoxville, so the fans in attendance likely appreciated Cope paying homage to that style early in the match.

Pac was then able to take advantage of Cope from the outside, which quickly gave him momentum. The pace of the match was slow, allowing for compact spots by both men without running them too fast throughout the match. After the commercial break, Cope regained control with a standup dropkick.

The cameras quickly went to the back as Jon Moxley and the Death Riders did a number on wrestling legends The Rock n Roll Express, who were seen laid out on the floor. Moxley told Cope to stay right there (meaning in the ring). The Death Riders came into the ring and all jumped on Cope. Then Jay White came to help Cope and even things out. The numbers game became too much again and the Death Riders left the ring with White and Cope recovering from the assault.

In-Ring Action/Other Tidbits

  • Hangman Adam Page picked up a win in a squash match.
  • Jaime Hayter defeated Julia Hart in a good match as they evened up their rivalry 1-1.
