“I am probably going to go down as the highest-paid fighter to fight in local four-rounders,” said Sacramento’s Kevin Montano.
Kevin Montano has a lot of followers on social media. Across his two Instagram accounts, he has nearly 100,000 followers. Montano stopped David Minter in the second round this past weekend. The fight took place on a club show on January 20 in Sacramento, California, promoted by Uppercut Promotions, and he is seeking a big 2024.
Last year was filled with agony.
“I was finally able to break the drought,” reflected Montano. “Last year, as you are well aware, I was unable to fight. I had a fight fall through at Cache Creek, and a fight fell through in Fresno. I went through what you could call depression, but I used the time to grow my brand.”
“My opponent for this fight pulled out two weeks ago, so I agreed to fight my opponent at welterweight. I am way too small for welterweight and will fight at lightweight for my next bout.”
The 26-year-old lightweight boxer with an undefeated record of 5-0, with three wins by way of knockout. His overwhelming aggression also spawned his nickname ‘No Mas.’ A Spanish phrase for ‘no more,’ which was famously spoken by Roberto Duran when he rematched ‘Sugar’ Ray Leonard, and said those words that ended the bout.
Montano’s next goal is promotion. He has started an Instagram account entitled ‘NoMas Promotions.’ He knows how to get local sponsors. He also knows how to return on investment. Not only does he have followers, but he also delivers results, which is Business 101. Montano’s acumen outside of the ring is similar to that of social media star turned-boxer Jake Paul.
Montano reflected on the following.
“At first, I didn’t like Jake Paul. I looked at what he was doing and thought about all the years I invested in the sport, and I was frustrated. Now, I look at what he is doing and love it. He is doing what I want to do, which is finding hidden gems and helping promote them. All of my inactivity has led me to want to help put on boxing shows for fighters in the future.”
Competing at the 2019 Olympic Trials, Montano is a hidden gem amongst the sport. He has fought the best and beaten some of the best. Now, his destiny is in his own hands. He was formally trained by Gary Sullenger but now works exclusively with super middleweight world title challenger Brandon Gonzales. Gonzales is now a gym owner running the Sacramento gym, Flawless Boxing.
Montano sees this year as his metamorphosis into a top prospect in the sport.
“It was the best business decision of my career. Working with Brandon, he is fixing many of my mistakes and helping me grow as a brand. I also can help bring people to his gym. It has been a good decision to take my career to the next level.”
