Leigh Wood Scores Shocking 7th Rd. TKO (Video)

In an absolute shocker, WBA featherweight champion Leigh Wood (28-3, 17 KOs) scored a seventh-round TKO victory over Josh Warrington (31-3-1, 8 KOs) live on DAZN. It was such a shocker because Wood seemed uninterested throughout the fight and somehow managed to put some punches together and score the TKO.

It was pretty clear from the start that Warrington was going to bull rush as usual, but Wood welcomed it instead of keeping his distance. Wood wasn’t jabbing, and Warrington felt he would have a good night. The momentum started shifting toward Warrington after the second round as he was landing cleanly on Wood, who had no answer for him. Warrington kept landing some rabbit punches, and the referee finally took a point from him in the seventh round.

Even with the point deduction, Warrington seemed to have the lead on points and had tight control of the fight. Wood was trying to put combinations together, but a cut over his right eye kept impairing his vision. Wood didn’t seem into the fight but knew he was not winning, so in the seventh round, as the clock winded down to the last seconds, he landed a pair of right and left hooks, sending Warrington down for the fight’s first knockdown. Warrington did beat the count but had his back turned towards the referee, and when evaluated, the referee stopped the fight as he felt Warrington should not continue.

After the fight, Wood’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, spoke glowingly of Wood and feels his time at featherweight has run its course, with a move to super featherweight now the next step for Wood. Looking at the super featherweight division, a fight can be made with Joe Cordina, who holds the IBF title, while the other champions belong to other networks. It’ll be interesting to see how Wood does at 130, but for now, he will enjoy this victory as he will more than likely not return until next year.
