Lucha Libre AAA 1/17/2026 Results & Reactions: El Hijo De Vikingo Becomes No. 1 Contender

Tonight’s Lucha Libre AAA show is streaming on both FOX Latin America and YouTube, respectively, and is topped by the #1 contender’s match between the former champion, El Hijo De Vikingo, and the not-so-Latin El Grande Americano. Vikingo represents one of the best Luchadores in the world, while Americano has managed to get over in front of every Spanish-speaking crowd in Triple A’s tour schedule.

With the company’s biggest draw, Dominik Mysterio injured, this show utilized ‘the other Mysterio’ in Dom’s father, Rey Mysterio Jr., who played the Triple H role as the legend that hypes up the crowd in the cold open with a mostly rah-rah speech. WWE should consider using some form of translation for English-speaking fans because the promos are often “uniquely Lucha” (not sure I can say it nicer; probably could meaner) and offer them the ability to further delve into the Lucha lore.

This show was basically the ‘part 1’ to AAA’s 2026 story, and many major programs were set up on this show, or set up for a later show, like in the case of El Hijo del Dr. Wagner Jr.’s program with Santos Escobar. The two shared a heated stare down before Escobar put the champ down on the map.

Penta promised a ‘company shifting’ announcement for this week’s AAA TV show, hopefully not a Royal Rumble announcement, since it was hyped as bigger.

LA BATALLA DE LOS MYSTERIO

Even Rey and Dom both utilized their time on cam tonight, pushing a potential showdown between the feuding father and son, but Dom’s was the coolest by far. Dom, hurt, cut a promo via video vignette where he narrated over a background of terrible A.I. depicting his dream of banners, posters, and statues, all in his name, hanging throughout Mexico.

Dom has two men competing to face him tonight, yet his program focused on his achievements over his father, mentioning his win over John Cena while Rey remained winless against the G.O.A.T.

The video went back and forth between animated portrayals of Dom’s narration in a comic-book style, then cut to the 28-year-old getting another tattoo and just being overly obnoxious. Rey joined JBL and Cory Graves on commentary ahead of the card’s opener, where he commented on his son in a manner that appears to be heading towards a future showdown.

EL HIJO DEL VIKINGO VS EL GRANDE AMERICANO- #1 Contender (AAA Mega Championship)

El Grande Americano (EGA) worked full-on face after months of being uber over with the Spanish/Latin crowds. If you did not catch a show in 2025 following the WWE takeover (recaps are in archives), then you might not be aware that the company, AAA, had a difficult time keeping their face champion from getting booed, while heel figures like EGA, often led by Dom, would get cheered like Bret Hart in Canada.

The narrative of tonight’s match was that EGA is no longer a heel that fans cheer; he is now a face that does not cheat. When the Americano character was first established (by Chad Gable), the gimmick was a ‘metal plate’ in the mask that the faux Mexican would utilize to beat his opponents. While Americano never kept Gable’s height, he did keep the gimmick.

Tonight, however, in the main event against one of the most exciting wrestlers on the planet, EGA threw away his plate and decided to try it ‘straight.’ It did not work.

The message of tonight: cheating does prosper.

Vikingo’s manager, Dorian Roldan, first interfered by grabbing EGA’s leg when attempting a suplex off the turnbuckle. Then, when the ref booted Dorian, Omos successfully played the assist to Vikingo’s win upon hitting his 630 senton. The crew was looking to further take out Americano, but that is when Rey Mysterio, who only moments before ran from commentary into the back, came running out with a kendo stick to send the show to black.

NINO HAMBURGUESA, LA PARKA & MR IGUANA VS ABISMO NEGRO, TAURUS & HISTERIA

It would not be a Triple A show without a multi-man tag match, and this one was fun enough. Mr. Iguana was given top billing and commentary put him over as having a ‘major year’ in 2025 as they showed top celebrities like Canelo and Bad Bunny interacting with his plush iguana gimmick named Yesca.

The faces picked up the win after La Parka danced and Hamburguesa flattened everyone’s buns. All of the wholesome aside, the mascot feels never risks growing stale in the world of Lucha. That said, it would be interesting to see these guys get a real shot to get over in the land of WWE—Mr. Iguana, especially.

FLAMMER(c) VS LADY SHANI- Singles

The non-title match showcased the work of AAA’s Reina de Reinas, Flammer, who did not get a lot of shine in last year’s co-op with WWE. However, her gimmick is capable of travel, and there does not seem to be a whole lot for her to capitalize on, and it might be time to bring over another WWE star to help build the bridge. For example, NXT’s Zaria is challenging for the TNA championship on the Genesis PPV, so why not make the upgrade from Natty?

Flammer picked up the win in a solid effort, and the fans reacted to her despite the nothing feud that felt over last year.
