Add FightsATW on GoogleThe second night of AAA‘s ‘Noche de Los Grandes‘ aired tonight on FOX Deportes and on WWE’s social media accounts. After last week’s epic El Grande Americano vs. El Grande Americano ‘Mask vs. Mask’ event, the bar has been raised on what quality wrestling looks and feels like— Ludwig’s version of the character won the match, but Chad Gable won the moment.
Tonight’s event showcased matches with future stakes and program-driving narratives at stake.
Rey Mysterio’s Big Announcement
It was teased that Rey Mysterio Jr., AAA‘s newest GM, would make a major announcement tonight regarding TripleMania—the two-night event scheduled for Las Vegas and Mexico City in September.
In a prerecorded video vignette in front of reporters from all over the world, Rey announced that the Mega Champion would have to pull double duty this year by defending the championship on night 2, regardless of who wins. That means the champion will have to jet-set from Vegas to Mexico City with little rest in between.
AAA Cruiserweight Title No. 1 Contender’s Fatal 5-Way Match
Mini Vikingo vs. Octagón Jr. vs. Joaquin Wilde vs. Cruz Del Toro vs. Lince Dorado
This match was the epitome of lucha libre-quality wrestling, featuring each of the 5 competitors vying for a shot at Rey Fenix’s newly won AAA Cruiserweight Championship, which he snatched from Laredo Kids in their epic match last week.
Mini Vikings was extra flashy on offense tonight, though he was also positioned to sell just as much—it is clear that they see potential in the young upstart. After all, Mini Vikingo has had quality TV time throughout the main event run on AAA TV over the last year. As the brother of the former Mega Champion, Mini Vikingo has been a spoil at times to his brother’s heelish faction.
Lince Dorado picked up the win and the right to face Fenix for the cruiserweight title at a later date. The fast-paced, all-action match sets up another potential banger between Dorado and Fenix, who is now positioned to really shine as cruiserweight champ after a sluggish start to his WWE soft launch.
NXT Women’s Champion and AAA World Mixed Tag Team Champion Lola Vice, Bayley & La Catalina vs. Reina de Reinas Champion Lady Flammer, La Hiedra & Maravilla of Las Tóxica
The faces put on a show tonight as AAA showcased both Lola Vice and La Catalina, while WWE sent Bayley to the promotion to help out the upstarts in the main event. The mixed tag co-champ and NXT world champ were successful against the heels of Las Toxicas and Reina de Reina’s champion Lady Flammer.
La Catalina, several months from her debut, picked up the win for her team as the tumultuous feuds have become intertwined at the top of the roster. The main event showcase makes it clear that AAA sees a bright future in all involved, but the fans win every time these women are in action.
