It’s fight week in Las Vegas, NV, as the WBC welterweight title is on the line on Saturday, February 21, when the champion Mario Barrios defends against Ryan Garcia on DAZN PPV.
Both fighters have a lot to prove—not only is a victory at stake, but their futures as well, since neither can afford a loss, especially a devastating one. Who will leave the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas with the WBC title draped over their shoulder?
IT’S THE RYAN GARCIA SHOW AND EVERYONE WILL BE WATCHING
When you think about Garcia’s career, it’s almost like driving past a car wreck; you don’t want to look as you pass, but you still do out of curiosity. That sums up Garcia, as he navigates his issues, which range from having beef with his promoter, Oscar De La Hoya, to testing positive for Ostarine on a VADA test before the Devin Haney fight. Fans still tune in out of curiosity.

When Garcia was coming up the ranks, he dazzled fans with his speed and punching power, which resulted in big knockouts. But as he started facing higher-level opponents and moving up in weight classes, those fights became more challenging. The Haney fight was different, but there will always be an asterisk next to it because of the positive PED test, so until they fight again, we won’t know what that fight would look like without Ostarine. After losing his next fight against Rolly Romero in May 2025, Garcia was still given a title shot, and now he has the chance to finally win a world title, which could bring some light to a career that hasn’t reached its full potential.
So how does Garcia pull it off? Garcia needs to stay loose and fight from mid-range, where his punches still pack power, rather than from the outside, where they might look like arm punches. Although it could be frustrating for Garcia to land on Barrios with his high guard defensive posture, he should take advantage of those moments to land hard shots to the body early and often. Additionally, Garcia must punch at Barrios’ arms and shoulders to lighten his defense as the fight progresses. Once that happens, I can see Garcia walking up to Barrios, landing a powerful left hook to the body, and knocking the champion down and out.
MARIO BARRIOS CAN BECOME A BIG NAME OVERNIGHT

Although fans would have preferred for Barrios to be more active with fights, he hasn’t been, with his last bout in July of last year against Manny Pacquiao ending in a majority draw. Barrios has been largely overlooked at welterweight and is often challenged because his peers see him as the weaker option at 147. However, each time Barrios steps into the ring, he leaves with the title he earned in 2024. Now, Barrios is in another prime position to leverage his opponent’s star power to elevate his brand to the next level.
Can Barrios replicate what Romero did to Garcia in May, and if so, how does he do it? Barrios needs to lead with his left jab from the very beginning and prevent Garcia from stepping in with his big left hook. He should also throw frequent combinations, especially when Garcia dips to his side without throwing punches. Barrios must avoid punching with Garcia and should hold when in close. With good footwork and effective boxing behind the jab, Barrios could win this fight by decision, as long as he doesn’t take unnecessary chances trying to knock out Garcia.
MARIO BARRIOS VS RYAN GARCIA PREDICTION

Given Barrios’ style, it might not be an exciting fight early on, but once it opens up, I can see Garcia stopping Barrios with a body shot late in the fight. Garcia wins by TKO in the championship rounds.
