Phoenix– Jaime Munguia showed he is more than deserving of a shot against Canelo Alvarez.
Munguia dropped John Ryder four times and knocked out the British southpaw in the ninth round of their 12-round super middleweight match at Footprint Center. Ryder, who was stopped for just the second time in his 13-year career, went the distance with Alvarez in his last fight – a 12-round, unanimous decision defeat last May 6 at Akron Stadium in Zapopan, Mexico.

Munguia (43-0, 34 KOs) floored Ryder once in the second round, again in the fourth round, and twice in the ninth round. Tony Simms, Ryder’s trainer, had a towel in hand in an attempt to stop the fight. In addition, two Arizona state commissioners stood on the ring apron to halt the bout. Referee Wes Melton, in the meanwhile, failed to see them. In the end, it was the timekeeper who had to stop the fight by ringing the bell. The official time of the stoppage was 1:25 of the ninth.
London’s Ryder (32-7, 18 KOs) was stopped for the first time since England’s Nick Blackwell stopped him in the seventh round of their May 2015 fight at O2 Arena in London.
The explosive Munguia dropped Ryder for the third time in their contest just 21 seconds into the ninth round when he connected with a thunderous right hand he didn’t see coming. A brave Ryder got up again but was dropped for a fourth time with 2:15 to go in the round.

Munguia nailed Ryder with a series of right hands in the eighth round. A courageous Ryder withstood the onslaught and backed up Munguia down the stretch.
Ryder followed up with several right hooks and landed a left uppercut with 1:10 to go in the seventh. Munguia started off the seventh with a warning after landing an immediate low blow, but it was Ryder who got the better of him in the round. Ryder had his best round of the night in the sixth and used his jab to keep the typically incendiary Munguia at bay.
With less than a minute remaining, Munguia sized Ryder up with the jab before getting on his bike and moving around the ring. However, Ryder tracked him down and landed a right to the body and a stiff right jab. Munguia landed with a right hand downstairs with 1:17 left in the round. Ryder connected with a solid right hook 23 seconds into the fifth. A counter jab sent Ryder down for the second time in the fight with just 15 seconds to go in the fourth round.

Munguia landed a hard straight right on the beltline with 2:19 left in the third. Ryder recovered from the knockdown and caught Munguia with a crisp straight left with 1:42 left in the round. Ryder went down with just over a minute remaining, but Melton correctly ruled that Munguia pushed him to the canvas.
In the second round, Munguia sent Ryder down with a beautiful straight right hand. Munguia went for the kill, but Ryder survived the storm. With less than a minute left, Munguia landed with a quick combination. Munguia landed with two right jabs at the 2:00-minute mark. Ryder connected with a right to the body with 2:29 remaining in the first.

Oscar Collazo and Reyneris Gutierrez both promised to deliver fireworks, but it was Collazo who obliterated his opponent.

The powerful Puerto Rican southpaw dropped Gutierrez and continued to pulverize him until referee Chris Flores stopped the action at 2:37 of the third round. Collazo’s triumphant performance served as the chief support to the Jamie Munguia–John Ryder 168-pound main event.
The 27-year-old Collazo (9-0, 7 KOs), a Newark, New Jersey native, made his second defense of the WBO minimumweight title. Gutierrez (10-2, 2 KOs), 28, of Nicaragua, has now dropped two of his last three fights.
Collazo trapped Gutierrez against the ropes and unloaded with a thunderous combination that left him out on his feet. The ropes kept Gutierrez up, but no knockdown was called. Collazo took advantage of the opportunity and continued to pursue Gutierrez, eventually dropping him with a hard left hand to the side of his head that floored him.

Gutierrez beat the count, but Collazo stepped back on the throttle and, overwhelmed him with power punches and forced Flores to halt the bout. Collazo landed a hard left hook around the guard to the jaw with 2:37 left in round three.
Collazo stepped on the gas to begin the second round. He connected with a right jab to the body and followed up with a right hand to the head to start the frame. With 1:54 remaining, Collazo connected with a sizzling right hand to the body.
Gutierrez landed with a series of rights to the body with 1:28 left, but Collazo fired back 13 seconds later with a sharp left hand that drew a reaction from the crowd. Collazo stepped on the gas to begin the second round. He connected with a right jab to the body and followed up with a right hand to the head to start the frame. With 1:54 remaining, Collazo connected with a sizzling right hand to the body.
Collazo, a five-time national amateur champion, connected with his excellent southpaw jab throughout the opening three minutes. Collazo also connected with a sharp right hand and a straight left that snapped Gutierrez’s head back with 14 seconds remaining in the round.
