What is at stake on Friday night when junior bantamweight Naomy Cardenas vs. Michelle Timko in El Paso, Texas? The fight card will capture the interest of boxing addicts looking to get a fix this weekend.

With the major fight of the week being a British offering, it is likely that many fans will ignore it. So, here is a chance for those domestically getting a televised fight card to shine. While boxing tends to have lulls in this new era, a week like this could organically produce new talent.

What are the stories?

Can The Former Titleholder Be A Champion?

Cardenas (10-2, 2 KOs) defeated Bree Howling last year. That win set her up for a WBO junior bantamweight title fight against Mizuki Hiruta. Though she lost, she accomplished something many never do: she fought for a title. In June, Cardenas suffered a setback, losing to Brittany Sims in a bantamweight bout.

Against Timko (5-0), an undefeated (but untested) up-and-comer, Cardenas will move back down in weight, with some regional titles on the line. Cardenas, 27, is in the prime of her career and is now looking to forge a path back to the top. The start is to do it as the main attraction of the card.

Timko is a 41-year-old from Omaha, Nebraska, who has fought only regionally and has beaten only one fighter with a winning record.

Deonte Brown Looks To Make His Own Path

Deonte Brown is a junior lightweight contender and, according to Brown’s team, served as the lead sparring partner for O’Shaquie Foster’s training camp for Raymond Ford earlier this year. Brown is an unbeaten contender who is looking to stay active by facing veteran Leonardo Padilla.

Padilla is no slouch. In 2023, he upset former contender Andy Vences and drew with Jeremy Hill. Last year, he lost a unanimous decision to Kaipo Gallegos and is coming off an upset win over Manuel Correa. Padilla is always dangerous, an awkward, fearless puncher.

Brown is a craftsman, and at 30, he also looks to show that he is a level above a fighter like Padilla, as he could be auditioning for bigger fights.

Adorno-Rodriguez, A 50-50 Fight

I am not saying Jeremy Adorno vs. Ever Moises Rodriguez will be the best fight of the month, but if it is, it wouldn’t shock me. The two were scheduled to face different opponents on the card; both saw their fights fall out. They opted to face each other in a crossroads fight.

The intrigue is two different journeys.

Adorno, a decorated amateur, was once signed to a major promoter. His lone loss came against Michael Angeletti in 2022. Since then, the featherweight Adorno has won three fights. The question I keep asking is: How much does Adorno still love boxing, and is he still in the game?

Whereas Rodriguez is a 22-year-old unbeaten fighter entering his sixth fight, having faced only one fighter with a winning record. The question about Rodriguez is even simpler: Is he good enough to take on a fight at this level right now? For people who love a good fight, this should be on your radar.

Ariana Carrasco And Kumar Prescod

Kumar Prescod has more national championships than he can remember. Now at super middleweight and fresh off serving as a sparring partner for Vito Mielnicki Jr ahead of his fight with Austin “Ammo” Williams, Prescod is ready to turn his camp experience into a win. He is a promising Oakland, California, fighter with a lot of grassroots hype behind him.

Ariana Carrasco is a major ticket seller and a decorated amateur. Probably the single biggest seller on this card, Carrasco fits the bill as a women’s boxing star if everything goes right. She will be in her fourth pro fight.
