The second undisputed title fight kicks off on Monday in the early hours here in the States as ‘The Monster’ returns to ESPN+. Undisputed super bantamweight champion Naoya Inoue (26-0, 23 KOs) will defend his titles against Luis Nery (35-1, 27 KOs). The fight takes place in what looks to be a sold-out Tokyo Dome in Japan, where boxing hasn’t seen action there since the greatest upset in its rich history: James ‘Buster’ Douglas dethroning Mike Tyson.
Inoue fought twice in 2023, but at the end of the year, he was crowned the undisputed super bantamweight champion when he knocked out Marlon Tapales. Inoue earned the undisputed crown in two weight classes within 12 months, earning him the BWAA Fighter of the Year award. Will Nery be another opponent that doesn’t make it to the final bell, or will it be a tougher matchup than initially thought?
Nery also fought twice in 2023, and one of those was considered the Fight of the Year by many, which was against Azat Hovhannisyan. Nery has been plagued with issues from not making weight to testing positive for performance-enhancing drugs. Even with all that, he has managed to get an opportunity of a lifetime against Inoue. Will he be able to defy the odds and become the new undisputed champion?
