One of the most intriguing fights of the year takes place on Friday, November 15, from the AT&T Stadium in Dallas, TX, streaming live on Netflix. YouTuber turned pro fighter Jake Paul (10-1, 7 KOs) will be stepping into the ring with “The Baddest Man on the Planet” Mike Tyson (50-6, 44 KOs) in a sanctioned eight-round pro fight, which will have 2-minute rounds. The fight has had significant buzz since being announced earlier this year, but things cooled off once the event was rescheduled due to Tyson’s health scare. Now that the new fight date is quickly approaching, earlier today, Netflix premiered the trailer for the fight, narrated by award-winning hip-hop artists and actor Ludacris.
The trailer highlights the success Paul has seen so far in boxing when facing MMA fighters, social media influencers, and boxers who were unproven. On the other hand, Netflix tugged on the nostalgia strings with Tyson as they showed vintage knockouts and interviews from his prime years in the sport. The fight has gained split opinions as Tyson is 58 years old and is many years past his knockout days, but casual fans are still holding on to the “what if” aspect of the matchup, which will certainly have them tune in. This almost looks like the scenario in the film Rocky Balboa where Mason Dixon (Antonio Tarver) was the champion, and he faced Rocky (Sylvester Stallone) in a fight where fans were excited about the “what if” aspect of the matchup, but reality quickly settled in on fight night for the much older Rocky. That’s a movie; this is reality, but you can’t help but think a similar outcome will occur.
The purists have barked at the thought of watching this fight, but this is more so for the casual crowd who love some good ol nostalgia. Netflix is banking on that part as they have seen it produce success like the highly consumed series Cobra Kai. Suppose the main event isn’t your cup of tea; the co-main featuring Katie Taylor(23-1, 6 KOs) defending her undisputed super lightweight titles against Amanda Serrano (47-2-1, 31 KOs) is highly anticipated. It is a rematch of their April 2022 classic that sold out the Madison Square Garden in NYC. Whatever your preference, November 15 on Netflix looks to be must-see TV.
