Devin Haney (33-0, 15 KOs) and Rolando Romero (17-2, 13 KOs) seem to be heading towards a potential showdown in late May. While Haney is a phenomenal fighter, he shouldn’t expect an easy fight, says Arnold Barboza Jr.
As he prepares for his fight against Kenneth Sims Jr, Barboza spoke to the Ring Magazine about his thoughts on Romero and Haney meeting each other in the ring.
“I like the fight. I think Rolly is a legitimate threat. He’s a champion for a reason. He has power in both hands and looked good at 147 pounds as well. Time will tell if he can hang with Haney,” he said.

Barboza’s words aren’t misplaced. Romero’s best chance lies in disrupting Haney’s rhythm and landing his trademark power. However, stylistically, the fight favors Haney, whose superior footwork, jab, and defensive awareness could allow him to control the distance and systematically outbox Romero over the rounds.
In fact, according to Barboza, Romero’s performance against Garcia is enough of an example of how explosive his ring craft is.
“He already beat Ryan, and you can’t knock that win, whatever Ryan says. At the end of the day, Rolly beat Ryan, and that was a good win for him,” he said. “Haney looked amazing and tremendous in his last fight against Brian Norman. But you can never count out Rolly. But I think Haney is going to pull that one out with a win. He’s a different beast at welterweight.”
“I’m Ready”

Meanwhile, Barboza hasn’t forgotten his upcoming fight against Sims. The very fact that he’s headlining a fight in his hometown, California, is fuel for him to strive harder to emerge victorious.
“It feels amazing to be headlining in my hometown. I’m thankful for Golden Boy and DAZN for this opportunity. I had a peaceful and great training camp in Big Bear, California, and I’m ready to put on a winning performance. I’m excited to show everyone what we’ve been working on,” he said.
