Oscar De La Hoya Gives An Update on Junior Middleweight Charles Conwell

Moments before the press conference for Saturday’s Arnold Barboza Jr. vs. Kenneth Sims Jr. fight card began, Golden Boy’s Oscar De La Hoya made a statement about one of his top junior middleweight fighters: Charles Conwell.

When asked about the 28-year-old Conwell, De La Hoya told FightsATW: “I’m actually going to talk to Eric (Gomez) right now. Yea, I hope he fights soon. I love Charles Conwell, but he’s been injured, had a few injuries, but we’ve been in contact with his team. I’m going to speak to Eric Gomez to see what the latest situation is but I do know that he’s been hurt. He’s pulled out of a few fights but I’m sure we can resolve everything because I love the guy. He’s a banger and can fight!”

It’s been 11 months since Conwell lost his WBO title eliminator to Jorge Garcia at the Frontwave Arena in Oceanside, CA. Before that fight, Conwell was the top contender in multiple sanctioning organizations, but the WBO fight would get him a title shot faster, though he had to get through Garcia first, which he failed to do. Garcia ended up getting the title shot against Xander Zayas for the vacant belt, and the rest is history.

Since then, there have been no signs of Conwell as his social media accounts went quiet after his loss in April 2025. Conwell has been forgotten, even though he remains one of the top fighters in the division despite the defeat. Maybe asking De La Hoya about him now will trigger some communication between Conwell and Golden Boy, especially since the next big Golden Boy event is on Cinco de Mayo weekend in Las Vegas, where Gilberto Ramirez faces off against David Benavidez for Zurdo’s unified cruiserweight titles.
